At its April 5 regular meeting, the Monona City Council awarded contracts for two significant upcoming projects.
The first was for the Kwik Star Water and Sewer Utility Extension Project, which will bring public utilities to the area south and west of Highway 18/52 and Falcon Avenue that was recently annexed into the city limits. MB Construction, based in Monona, had the low bid of $357,022.
The other project is the extension of the Monona Recreational Trail from Gateway Park to the intersection of Spruce and Main streets. The contract was tentatively awarded to Bacon Concrete LLC, of Postville, at a cost of $99,748.11. Work will likely begin later in the construction season.
Ordinance change related to vehicle noise
The council approved the first reading amending an ordinance pertaining to noise created by running vehicles. City administrator Barb Collins said the change would allow businesses or personal contractors with semi trucks to leave town, or leave their vehicles running for a short time, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. That is currently prohibited.
Collins said the new Kwik Star convenience store, which will be constructed in Monona in 2022, will have 12 spots where semis can park and run over night.
“Monona Wire has also stated they have semis that come and go during the evening or are left running,” she added. “It was the city’s opinion to do away with that part of the ordinance. We still have a noise ordinance, so if someone has an issue, they can go that way.”
Appliance, electronics drop-off day planned
The council approved holding an appliance and electronics drop-off day for Monona residents only on Wednesday, May 5. People can bring appliances and electronics to the gravel parking lot across from the community center from 3 to 6 p.m. They will be responsible for loading the items onto a trailer. There will be no fee for appliances and electronics, excluding televisions and monitors, which will cost $25 apiece. That fee will cover taking the items to the Winneshiek County Landfill.
