Bulldogs continue strong start, break school record in sprint medley relay

Karter Decker continued to shine in the sprint events, placing first in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes in the meets at Ed-Co and Postville.

At Postville, Josh Reichard was sixth in the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 6 inches.

Carter Blietz-Bentien was part of MFL MarMac’s 4x800 and 1600 distance medley relays, which both finished third at the Postville meet. Blietz-Bentien also had a good day individually, placing second in the 800 meter run.

On April 8, Victor Breuer had a strong showing for the Bulldogs in the 400, earning fifth place.

The MFL MarMac boys track and field team continued a strong start to the season last week, placing fifth out of 15 teams in a meet at Edgewood-Colesburg, then fourth of nine teams at Postville, including a record-breaking performance in the 800 sprint medley relay.


At Ed-Co, on April 6, the Bulldogs were again led by sophomore Karter Decker, who placed first in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, with respective times of 11.50 and 23.13. He also claimed second in the 400, completing the lap around the track in 52.30.


In addition to Decker, Callum Johnson and Hunter Kugel also competed in the 100. Johnson was 24th at 13.29, while Kugel was 33rd at 14.56. In the 200, Kugel finished 40th with a time of 31.61. Other MFL MarMac runners in the 400 were Carver Blietz-Bentien, who was 12th at 58.56, and Victor Breuer, who was 20th at 1:02.28.


Cayden Ball was the Bulldogs’ top performer in the distance events, placing fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:09.49. Brandon Christofferson earned eighth in that event, finishing in 5:27.63.


Cody Moses was 10th in the 3200 with a time of 12:37.15, while Callum Johnson and Izayah Streicher were 17th and 18th, respectively, in the 800 with times of 2:37.33 and 2:38.05.


In the relays, MFL MarMac’s best finish came in the 4x800, where Blietz-Bentien, Ball, Christofferson and Caleb Nordheim earned a 9:23.26 time—good for second place. The Bulldogs also placed in the 4x200, as Bryce Radloff, Wyatt Powell, Cyrus Johnson and Tristen Koehn combined to finish fifth with a time of 1:43.30.


Additionally, MFL MarMac was seventh in the 4x100, run in 47.42 by Decker, Colin Moses, Radloff and Powell. Another group of Cyrus Johnson, Nordheim, Breuer and Callum Johnson was 18th with a time of 51.94. In the 1600 distance medley, Cyrus Johnson, Koehn, Colin Moses and Christofferson combined to place eighth at 4:10.75. The 800 sprint medley team of Radloff, Koehn, Powell and Cyrus Johnson was 12th at 1:51.78.


In the field events, Colin Moses was MFL MarMac’s lone long jump competitor. He completed a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches to put him in fourth place. In the discus, Josh Reichard had a throw of 106 feet, 7 inches­—good for eighth place—while Jacob Trudo finished 14th with a throw of 98 feet, 5 inches.


The highlight of the team’s April 8 meet at Postville came in the 800 sprint medley relay. Radloff, Cullen McShane, Colin Moses and Decker ran the event in 1:39, earning first place and breaking the MFL MarMac school record. The previous record of 1:43.85 was set in 2017.


That wasn’t the only relay to do well. The Bulldogs placed third in the 4x200, 4x800 and 1600 distance medley, as well as fourth in the 4x400. The 4x200 squad included Radloff, Powell, Cyrus Johnson and Koehn and ran a time of 1:41.06—a two-second improvement from the previous meet. Blietz-Bentien, Ball, Christofferson and Nordheim finished the 4x800 in 9:26.81, and the distance medley group of McShane, Koehn, Radloff and Blietz-Bentien notched a time of 4:08.67, which was also two seconds faster than at Ed-Co. Cyrus Johnson, Breuer, Callum Johnson and Nordheim had a time of 4:05.43 in the 4x400.


In the sprint events, Decker continued to shine, again placing first in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. His times of 11.04 and 22.30 were both faster than at the previous meet. 


Kugel competed in the 100 and 200 as well, placing 20th in the 100 with a time of 14.31 and 22nd in the 200 with a time of 31.32.


Breuer had a strong showing for the Bulldogs in the 400, earning fifth place at 1:01.99. Callum Johnson ran the 400 hurdles, finishing ninth at 1:11.94.


In the 800, Blietz-Bentien took the second spot with a time of 2:19.68, and Streicher completed the event in 2:36.43 to finish seventh. Ball improved his mile time to 5:08.12, placing third, and Christofferson ran six seconds faster, at 5:21.31, and finished seventh. Cody Moses’ eighth place result in the 3200 included a 13:43.69 time.


MFL MarMac had place winners in three different field events. Colin Moses completed a jump of 17 feet, 11 inches to come in second in the long jump, while McShane tied for third in the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 4 inches. Reichard was sixth in the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 6 inches, and Trudo was 10th at 103 feet, 2 inches. Trudo was also 10th in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet.


The Bulldogs have two meets on the schedule this week, at Decorah on April 12, then at home on April 15.
