Fall has arrived, and Marquette and McGregor are preparing for a busy weekend of activities.

The annual Fall Arts and Crafts Festival will take place at McGregor’s Triangle Park on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3-4. Around 50 vendors are expected this year, with most setting up outside, and a limited number—physically distanced—inside the nearby Backwoods Event Center. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Marquette’s Flea Market Under the Bridge will also return Oct. 3-4, offering a unique selection of arts, crafts and collectibles from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., daily.

Even though the Great River Road - Road Race (GRRRR) has gone virtual this year, with participants able to complete the 5K, 10K or kids fun run at Pikes Peak State Park any time through the end of October, the traditional GRRRR pancake breakfast with chicken gravy will still be held on the originally-planned race day. Stop by Backwoods from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, to dine in or carry out. Deliveries will also be available to people in the cities of Marquette and McGregor. Call (563) 380-3697 to set up delivery. Free will donations will go toward the Turner Park Splash Pad.

On Saturday, free carriage rides will be available in downtown McGregor from noon to 4 p.m., weather permitting. The Left Bank Shop and Gallery will have DIY pumpkin kits available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and artist Mike Kabele will lead a painting demonstration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Artists are also encouraged to participate in the first-ever “Paint the Town.” Held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, participants will set up in an outdoor location of their choice in either Marquette or McGregor. There, they will create their own painting of the scene around them—all in a beautiful fall setting.

Spots are limited, so contact the McGregor-Marquette Chamber at (563) 873-2186 or mcgregormarquettechamber@gmail.com to register. A small fee will cover the cost of canvas, paint and other supplies. There will be two divisions: adult and children 18 and under. Prizes will be given to the winner in each category. Judging will take place at 4:30 p.m., in McGregor’s Triangle Park.

Another fun Saturday activity includes HawkWatch at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre, in Marquette. The event, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., celebrates the magnificent fall migration of hundreds of thousands of raptors and other birds along the Mississippi River Flyway.

Birding experts will be on hand to help identify raptors and other birds migrating through the area, and River Valley Raptor staff will present “Falcons of the Driftless” live bird programs. All programs will be held outdoors. In an effort to limit crowd sizes, two, 15-minute programs will be held in the morning and then again in the afternoon.

While visiting Marquette and McGregor, people are encouraged to check out the communities’ shops, bars/restaurants and parks. Other activities include wine tasting and museum, cave and boat tours.
