Hazel L. (Wachter) Ellis, 100, of Patch Grove and Prairie du Chien, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Prairie Maison Nursing Home in Prairie du Chien.

She was born Nov. 3, 1919, in Midland, S.D., the daughter of Herman and Mertie (Kaiser) Wachter. At the age of 20, she and her family moved to a farm in Woodman, in September 1940, with one brother and two sisters remaining in South Dakota.

Hazel was united in marriage with Oscar A. Ellis on Feb. 10, 1945, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 25, 1985. They lived on the family dairy farm on Military Ridge from 1945 to 1982, when they built a home in Patch Grove. Hazel resided in Patch Grove until 2001, when she made her home with her daughter, Lynn, on the farm in rural Glen Haven for 16 years. Due to failing health, Hazel moved to Prairie Maison in 2017. Hazel loved to bake, especially date-filled cookies, doing needle crafts, playing cards and crocheting. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, WELCA in Prairie du Chien, and the American Legion Auxiliary-Grey-Wachter-Murphy Post Mt. Hope.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Lynette Erdenberger of rural Glen Haven; daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Roberts of Madison; four grandchildren, William (Alesha) and Joseph Erdenberger of Glen Haven, and Carla and Kent Ellis of Madison; three great-grandchildren, William, Ava and Thomas Erdenberger; one brother, Louis Wachter of Woodman; a sister, Dorice Van Vorst of St. Paul, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Doris Ann Wachter of Fennimore, and Bernadine Wachter of Woodman; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by nine brothers, Harold, Clifford, Robert, Carl, Russell, Herman, Donald, Edward and Kenneth; three sisters, Cleone Eckert, Ina England and Florence Wachter; son, Frank “Butch” A. Ellis in 2014; and son-in-law, Wm. G. Erdenberger in 1998.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to your charity of choice. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, July 29, at Union Nagle Cemetery in Patch Grove, with Rev. Miranda Klosterboer as the officiant. Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation service of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family with arrangements.
