Clayton County saw an increase of 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past week, with the total jumping from 50 on July 13 to 61 as of Tuesday morning. According to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), 13 of those people have not yet recovered from the virus.

Since March, three Clayton County residents have died as a result of COVID-19.

Iowa had 343 new cases Monday, according to IDPH, bringing the state’s total to 39,251. On July 17, Iowa reported 879 COVID-19 cases, a record for new cases in a single day since the pandemic began.

In a statement on Sunday, the IDPH said a significant number of COVID-19 test results were not reported over the weekend due to a backlog that occurred in IDPH’s electronic reporting system.

The reporting backlog is processing now and case counts will continue to update as usual. The delay in reporting will result in adjustments to some daily case counts reported last week.

IDPH said the reporting backlog did not impact the notification of test results to individuals tested either through Test Iowa or other providers.

To date, 28,058 Iowans have recovered from COVID-19. There have been 797 deaths, including one on Monday.

Last week, a report prepared for the White House Coronavirus Task Force revealed Iowa is one of 18 states in the “red zone” for new coronavirus cases, meaning they had more than 100 new cases per 100,000 population. The state was in the “yellow zone” for test positivity, meaning between 5 and 10 percent of test results were positive.

The report suggested those red zone states should re-implement some coronavirus-related restrictions due to the increasing number of cases.

Area COVID count

Outside of Dubuque County, which saw an addition of 210 confirmed cases over the past week, to 1,210 total, Clayton has seen the largest increase in COVID-19 positives in area counties. Delaware and Winneshiek counties each had eight new cases within the past week, bringing their totals to 66 and 58, respectively. Winneshiek County has 13 active cases and one death, while Delaware has seven active cases and one death. Fayette County’s case total went up by six, to 65 total. According to IDPH, 34 people there have not yet recovered. Allamakee County added two confirmed cases, bringing the total to 140, with 16 of those still active. Four people have died. Across the river, Crawford County, Wis., has had 48 positive test results, four of which are currently active.
