After overpowering Pirates, Bulldogs drop second round game to North Linn

After an easy opening-round playoff victory over Postville early in the week, the MFL MarMac softball team couldn’t keep the momentum rolling in a season-ending shutout loss to undefeated North Linn.
The Bulldogs hosted winless Postville July 13, dismantling the Pirates 15-3 in three innings. They racked up a combined 15 hits in the game—including at least one from each starter—and scored five times in the first inning and a whopping nine times in the second.
Sophomore Abby Schellhorn was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two RBIs, a stolen base and three runs scored. Keri Picha tallied two hits, both of them doubles, drove in three runs and crossed the plate once herself. Brinan Berger doubled and tripled, driving in a run and scoring three times. Jordan Schubert also had two hits, knocked in a run, stole a base and scored twice.
MFL MarMac’s sophomore pitcher, Lauren Haberichter, had a strong night on the mound, allowing just four Pirate hits and two earned runs. She struck out seven batters.
However, it was a different story for the Bulldogs two nights later, at North Linn. The Lynx jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning, then continued to add on, including a six-run second and five-run fourth.
Senior Abby Flanagan held the MFL MarMac bats at bay, surrendering just one hit and one walk, while striking out seven. Berger had the Bulldogs’ lone hit, and Picha drew the walk.
With the loss, MFL MarMac finished its season with an overall mark of 11-6.
