Bulldogs take two from Central in rain-shortened week

Rain dampened much of the MFL MarMac softball team’s schedule last week, postponing a doubleheader with Turkey Valley and canceling one game at North Linn. Even the two games the Bulldogs managed to sneak in on June 23 against Central were played a night later than planned due to inclement weather.
The Bulldogs made the most of their limited time on the field, though, sweeping Central in a key Upper Iowa Conference match-up.
MFL MarMac won the first game 7-2. The offense cranked out two runs in both the first two innings, then three in the fourth. Sophomore pitcher Lauren Haberichter took it from there, limiting the Warriors to just two hits over seven innings (both runs were unearned). She had nine strikeouts.
Haberichter also had a big night at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBIs. Junior Mackenzy Ruff was 2-2 with an RBI and run scored, while senior Keri Picha picked up one hit, drove in two runs and scored once. Fellow senior Jordan Schubert finished the game 3-4 and scored three of the team’s seven runs. Sophomore Abby Schellhorn doubled and also drove in a run.
In the second game, it was Central who took an early advantage, scoring once in the first inning and again in the third. MFL MarMac snatched the lead in the bottom of the sixth, when four runners crossed the plate. The Warriors couldn’t counter the attack, and MFL MarMac won 4-2.
Offensively, the Bulldogs had contributors up and down the lineup. Picha, Haberichter, Schellhorn and freshman Savannah Schaller each had one hit and one RBI apiece in the game. Senior Brinan Berger singled twice and scored a run.
On the mound, Ruff kept Central to just five hits and two earned runs over seven innings, while striking out eight batters.
The 4-0 Bulldogs will have a busy schedule this week, starting with a home doubleheader against West Central on Monday, June 29. They’ll host South Winneshiek for two games on Wednesday, July 1, then North Fayette Valley for a doubleheader on Thursday, July 2. The team will close out the week with a non-conference match-up with Sumner-Fredericksburg on Friday, July 3.
