The MFL MarMac softball team swept Upper Iowa Conference foe Clayton Ridge in a doubleheader June 17, to start the season 2-0.
The first game was a 22-4 rout, book-ended by seven Bulldog runs in the first inning and 12 in the fifth. In addition to 11 hits, MFL MarMac players walked 14 times in the game and were hit by four pitches.
The effort was led by senior Jordan Schubert, who went 3-4—including two doubles—with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Lauren Kishman was 2-2, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Fellow freshman Ashley Shaw added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored, while senior Keri Picha finished the game 2-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Sophomore pitcher Lauren Haberichter tossed five innings for the Bulldogs, allowing seven hits and striking out nine batters.
The second game of the doubleheader was much closer, with MFL MarMac edging Clayton Ridge 8-5. Despite tallying just four hits, the team managed to score in nearly every inning, keeping the pressure on the Eagles.
Schubert had another big game, going 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Another senior, Brinan Berger, was also 2-3, drove in a run and scored once. Sophomore Abby Schellhorn drew two of MFL MarMac’s seven walks and scored one time.
Haberichter pitched three innings of three-hit ball. Junior Mackenzy Ruff was also on the mound for three innings, allowing four hits and four earned runs.
The Bulldogs’ schedule this week includes a home doubleheader against Central on Tuesday, June 23, then a doubleheader at Turkey Valley on Wednesday, June 24. MFL MarMac will have a non-conference match-up at North Linn on Friday, June 26.
