Brian C. Minger
Brian Charles Minger of Garber, died May 14, 2020.
Joint funeral service with his mother, Leila, who passed away in March, will be scheduled at a later date.
Brian was born on Jan. 22, 1949, on a farm near Millville. He was born during a snowstorm and was the second of seven children born to John Lowell Minger and Leila Blanche (Moser) Minger.
After graduating from high school in Guttenberg, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1968. He was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kan. for the duration of his enlistment. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He returned to his parent’s home and began working at Livingston Lumber in Guttenberg as well as working for some of the local farmers in his spare time. One of those was Marvin Williams, where he met his future wife, Darlene Williams. They married on July 14, 1973. Their first of three daughters, Heather, was born in May of 1974. Dawn followed in August 1977, and Krista was born in March of 1979.
Brian retired from Livingston Lumber in 1996 after 25 years. He worked part-time for Silver Edge Co-Op in Strawberry Point for several years, allowing him extra time to spend with his grandchildren. He retired from that after being diagnosed with leukemia. Even after he began low dose chemotherapy, he kept being a light in all of our lives. He was frequently telling cheesy jokes, laughing at the antics of his grandkids, watching birds out his living room window, fishing, doing puzzles, or adding to his expansive frog statuettes collection.
He gave more to everyone around him than he usually got back, and rarely complained about it. He was a huge advocate of the Boy Scouts of America for over 20 years. He started as an Assistant Scout Master and later became a Scout Master for the Garber Troop. He volunteered with Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Elkport, including being church president for a time. In his last few years, he would go on a trip with his friend, Jonas, providing him transportation to auctions and such because he could help him like that. He really missed those trips when he could no longer make them.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene “Dot;” daughters, Heather Eddy and her two children, Dawn (Austin) Hawkins and their two children, and Krista (Tom) Falck and their four daughters and one granddaughter; his siblings, Bruce (Myrna) Minger, Patty LePage, Penny (Marvin) VansCoy, Bradley Minger (special friend, Janell Scott), Tom (Beth) Minger, and John (Marcy) Minger; several aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews, and cousins.
