Frederick H. Thein, 91, of Rockton, Ill., passed away on March 19, 2020 at William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wis.

Per his request, there will be no visitation or services.

Cremation rites to be accorded and inurnment to take place in Cedar Memorial Park Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids. 

Frederick was born Nov. 3, 1928, in rural Garber, the son of Fred and Emma (Barton) Thein. He attended 12 years in Elkport schools. Frederick entered the U.S. Air Force at age 17 and served for three years. He spent 26 months in Germany with Occupation Forces of World War II. Frederick married his wife, Betty Lewin, on July 17, 1946. They were married 57 years until her death in 2003. Frederick retired from FMC in Cedar Rapids in 1982 and retired from IDOT in Marion in 1990. Frederick was a member of the American Legion Post 512 in Edgewood and was also a member of the Northeast Iowa Farm and Antique Association.

Frederick lived a full life and his friends and family will remember him as a kind and thoughtful man. He enjoyed telling stories of his childhood and of his years in Germany. He was a talented carpenter, he could fix anything, and he enjoyed doing yardwork and always kept a meticulous lawn.

Frederick was a loving father and grandfather and is survived by his daughter, Stacie Bolen, of Dakota, Ill.; grandchildren, Tyann Thein and Heather Thein of Oxford Junction, Tera Thein of Cedar Rapids, Heidi (John) Mangold of Hiawatha and Seth and Emily Bolen of Dakota, Ill.; 13 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Dennis in 2005, son, Rodney in 2016; grandson, Jason Thein; his parents; three brothers and three sisters.
