Carl Duane Hakert, 75, of Elkader, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. He was born April 2, 1944, in Wadena, to George M. and Esther C. (Fritz) Hakert. Carl attended Central Community School, graduating with the Class of 1962. He served in the United States Air Force, stationed in Europe.

He was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Burlingame on April 14, 1984, in Calmar, IA. Carl was Parts Manager at Red Country and Windridge for many years and also farmed. He enjoyed playing softball, hunting, fishing and playing cards. In the fall Carl would love to go squirrel hunting and was very good at it. For several years he had an annual squirrel fry for several men.

Carl was an instigator—he loved to “stir up” people—then walk away and laugh!

Carl was a member (maybe even a founding father—the boys can’t remember) of the elite Pronto Good Ole Boys Coffee Group. He served in different positions in the club—standing, sitting, etc. Carl was able to “hold his own” perhaps even add to stories shared. Until we meet again friend—you will be missed.

Survivors include his wife Sandra of Elkader; one son, Deron Hakert of Strawberry Point; two stepdaughters, Carolyn Olsen of Downers Grove, IL and Kimberly (Dean) Lee of West Des Moines; six grandchildren, Tanner Hakert, Olivia Lee, Addison Lee, Gavin Lee, Jade Hrovatin and Lillian Hrovatin; one brother, Marlen (Deb) Hakert of Manchester and one sister, Karol Ann Sauerbry of Manchester.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Karla K. Hakert in 2004, and a niece, Jolene Hakert in 2018.

A visitation was held one hour before the service on Friday, October 18, 2019, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home in Elkader. The funeral service was at 11 am on Friday, October 18, 2019 at the funeral home. Interment with military honors followed at East Side Cemetery, Elkader

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Elkader assisted the family. Online condolences may be left with www.graufuneralhomes.com
