Every summer, Peoples State Bank hires high school students and has an intern program for college students to help give real-world experience to local youth.

Many of these students and interns have turned into full-time employees. Currently around 10-15 former students and interns are working at the bank full-time, including their current CFO and SVP of Bank Operations Brennen Clark.

“We’ve employed high school students for a long time now, but we started the college internship program in 2016,” said Aphton Check, Peoples State Bank marketing manager. “Most students start as a teller, but eventually most also gain experience with other departments, such as loan officers, processing, credit finance and IT,” she added.

This summer, Peoples State Bank had three students work as interns; McKenna Keeney, Zach Mara and Erin Hemmer.

Keeney was very humbled by the response she received from Peoples State Bank this summer. “I am so grateful for my colleagues who were so accepting and willing to help with any questions I had. Peoples State Bank is an outstanding business that our community is very lucky to have,” she said.

Mara, who spent his second summer with Peoples State Bank, said he enjoyed working at Peoples State Bank a lot and hopes to continue working there in the future. “This past year, the bank has given me the opportunity to interact with many of our employees from all 20 branches as a Help Desk Technician in the IT Department. I’m looking forward to working at Peoples State Bank until I go to college and maybe even after college.”

Hemmer also had high praise for Peoples State Bank saying, “Every day of work has felt like an exciting new adventure, with no two days ever being exactly the same. I want to thank the bank for the incredible opportunity to gain experience and expand my knowledge.”

Crawford County Executive Director of Economic Development, Jim Bowman said this program is great in terms of getting people to stay in the area. “Our top priority is to retain our top talent, so anytime a person can have a positive experience with an internship will help encourage them to remain in the area,” he said.

Those interested in applying for a student position or internship can contact the bank’s Human Resource Department at their main office by calling (608) 326- 3500.
