Hoppers’ fine season comes to an end
The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers’ stellar season came to an end with a 9-3 loss to Waupun in the Class A American Legion State Baseball Tournament Monday night in Westby.
The Hoppers finished the season with a 29-8 record. They were 2-2 in the state tournament.
The Hoppers were defeated by Waupaca 3-0 in their first game of the double elimination state tournament Friday afternoon.
Prairie du Chien then won their next two games, 5-0 over Arcadia on Saturday and 6-0 over host Westby-Coon Valley Sunday, to reach the semifinals.
Waupun defeated Prairie in the semifinal 9-3.
In the first inning, Prairie du Chien got their offense started when Grant Martin drew a walk, scoring one run.
Waupun pulled away for good with five runs in the third inning. In the third, Reece Homan singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run. Keegan Hartgerink doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. Carson Bresser doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs and Cole Hicker singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
After Waupun scored one run in the top of the seventh, the Hoppers answered with one of their own when Hunter Davis grounded out, scoring a run.
Noah Gerritson was on the pitcher’s mound for Waupun. He went six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out nine.
Gavin Gillitzer was on the hill for Prairie du Chien. He surrendered eight runs on 12 hits over six innings, striking out four. Clayton DuCharme threw one inning out of the bullpen.
Dylan Coleman led the Hoppers with three hits in four at bats.
Waupun racked up 13 hits in the game. Hartgerink, Baron Buchholz, Caleb Sauer and Homan all had multiple hits for Waupun.
Shortstop and pitcher Dylan Coleman, catcher Drake Coleman and pitcher and second baseman Cory Check were named to the All Tournament Team.
