Loretta A. “Letty” Oehler, 83, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.

She was born July 21, 1935, in Hunter Township, Jackson County, Minn., the daughter of Albert and Mary (Gombos) Vancura.

As a youth Letty was very active in 4-H Club, specializing in sewing, foods, and livestock, receiving several awards locally and at the state level. She took piano lessons, played clarinet in the school band and joined St. Joseph's Church choir. After high school, she attended Mankato State Teacher’s College (now the University of Minnesota at Mankato) for three years, receiving a certificate to teach elementary grades. Letty married Maurice Oehler on Aug. 21, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Church in Lakefield, Minn. She was a stay-at-home mother of four children. She did some substitute teaching, took in sewing, and did laundry for students at Campion Jesuit High School. Since 1974, Letty had been teaching private piano lessons in her home. In 1964, Letty started singing in St. John’s Church choir in Prairie du Chien. Later she was organist, choir director, and then parish music director for many years at St. John’s. She organized a special group of singers, forming the Resurrection Choir that sings for funerals. Traveling with the family camping across the USA was her favorite pastime.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Maurice, of Prairie du Chien; her children, Anne (Tim) Olson, Mark (Kris) Oehler, Mary (David) McDonnell and Tom (Mary) Oehler; her sister, Carole Rost; her grandchildren, Andrew (Lindsey) Drake, Jenny (Brian) Summers, Mike (Kristin) Olson, Clarissa (Sean) Russell, Nathaniel Oehler, Kelly and Megan McDonnell, Ben and Sam Oehler; along with three great- and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers; Gerald and Joe Vancura; brother-in-law William Rost; her sisters, Mildred Vancura and Geraldine Wiese; along with her granddaughter Angie Drake.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Church of the Holy Family Parish with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Sunday, June 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien, where there will be a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a wake scripture at 7 p.m., and also one hour prior to the Mass on Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Family Parish Music Program.
