Robert Dennler
Robert William Dennler (Bob), 87, of Elkader, died Friday, January 18, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. He was surrounded by family and friends. Bob was born February 15, 1931, in Volga, Iowa, to Elmer and Amanda (Mueller) Dennler. Bob attended country school until 8th grade. He served in the US Army as a medic from 1953 to 1954. During that time he was stationed in France and Germany.
On November 10, 1956, Bob was united in marriage to Jane Neylan. Five children were born to this union. He and Jane, along with their children, farmed outside of Elkader until 2003. During this time and their retirement they enjoyed playing cards, visiting the boat, and sharing in their grandchildren’s various activities. In 2014, Bob and Jane moved to the assisted living in Elkader where they enjoyed having visitors and getting to know the staff. Bob served as a Boardman Township trustee for over 30 years.
Bob was a special man to many and will be dearly missed by those close to him, for his sense of humor, compassionate nature and love of family. It was hard to leave his presence without an offer of a beer, a hug and a kiss.
Survivors include his five children, Carol (Jim) Gordon of Elkader, Kevin Dennler of Elkader, Keith (Paulette) Dennler of Forest Lake, MN, Karen (Andy) Koehn of Elgin, Kurt (NiCole) Dennler of Elkader; six grand-children, Nick (Nicole) Dennler, Reese Dennler, Danielle Koehn, Sara (Trey) Bodensteiner, Ariel Dennler, and Drake Dennler; three step-grandchildren, Zachary Ewing, Ashley and Kurt Gordon; one great-grandchild, Beau Dennler (Nick and Nicole); sisters, Joan (Marvin) Williams, of Lakeville, MN and Hilda Jach of Elkader; brother, Virgil (Viola) Dennler of Elkader; sisters-in law, Patty (David) Murray of Sun Prairie, WI, Bonnie Neylan of Menlo Park, CA; brother-in-law, Bob Graves of Decatur, AL, along with special friends Jenna and Zach Bennington and daughters Harper and Madison.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Jane (2015); parents, Elmer and Amanda Dennler; mother and father-in-law, John and Grace Neylan; father-in-law, Robert Ricketts; sisters, Lois Loftsgard and Marlene Graves; brothers-in law, John Neylan, George Jach, and Ray Loftsgard.
A visitation was held from 9 to 11 a,m Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader with Rev. Jon Haack officiating.
