The Hawks boys basketball team returned home with an afternoon affair against Barneveld on Saturday, Jan. 26. Barneveld came in winning seven games in a row and the Hawks winning the past five games.

The Hawks started the game out slow as Barneveld attacked the Hawks at the rim and knocked down a few 3-pointers to start the game.  The Hawks switched to a 1-3-1 trapping zone to help turn the momentum. The trapping zone defense allowed the Hawks to force some turnovers and missed shots and get some early run-outs to help take a 37-22 lead at the half. Mark Welter, Ben Teynor and Gavin Gillitzer led the Hawks in the first half with 10, 8, and 8. The Hawks struggled from the free throw line in the first half by going 2-8.

Barneveld came back in the second half, and the intensity increased as Barneveld cut the lead back to 5 points. Once again, the Hawks maintained their composure and went 8-9 from the free throw line in the last four minutes.

It was a tremendous team effort as the Hawks had four players in double figures. Mark Welter led the Hawks with 18 points. Mason Kramer had 14. Hunter Davis netted 12 and Gavin Gillitzer scored 11.  Josh Dyer led the Hawks in rebounding with 6 rebounds, and Mason Kramer and Josh Dyer led the Hawks with four assists apiece. The Hawks are 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the SWC. Next up will be another road game against Waukon, Iowa on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
