County gets $285,750 for

31 tax delinquent properties

By Ted Pennekamp

Crawford County recently sold 31 tax delinquent properties at an auction at Kramer Real Estate and Auction of Prairie du Chien for a total of $285,750.

The most noteworthy property sold was the Satter Building property for $40,000. Mark Thornburg of Prairie du Chien and California purchased the 2.88-acre property which includes the former Satter Building plus a small house-like building behind the Satter Building. There is also a white structure attached to the Satter Building.

The Satter Building is at 111 W. Dunn St., Prairie du Chien. It was foreclosed upon on Aug. 2 and the county regained ownership because back taxes, interest and penalties totaling $63,061.77 had not been paid. Back taxes had been owed since 2012.

The new owners of any property purchased at the auction would not be responsible for any back taxes, interest or penalties.

The Satter Building has sat vacant since the county sold it to Prairie River Investments of Madison for $350,000 in 2006.

Thornburg said he plans to clean the asbestos and lead from the buildings and tear down the big, red Satter Building. A white, smaller structure attached near the front of the red Satter Building is expected to be kept. The property may eventually become residential lots.

Another property of note that is expected to be foreclosed upon is the Blackhawk Junction Mall. Blackhawk Junction Mall, which has owed back taxes since 2014, owes a total of $341,012.27 including back taxes, interest and penalties.

If the amount is not paid,  Crawford County will become the owners of Blackhawk Junction Mall in May of 2019 and the property will probably be auctioned off, said Deanne Lutz, county treasurer. Lutz said several people have made inquiries about Blackhawk Junction.

Blackhawk Junction was purchased on Oct. 23, 2006, by Blackhawk Junction LLC of Madison, which has the same address as Prairie River Investments.

Blackhawk Junction is located at 700 E. Blackhawk Ave., Prairie du Chien, and sits on 8.37 acres.
