Grasshoppers are champions of Viroqua Tournament
The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers American Legion baseball team won the championship of the Viroqua Tournament held June 21 through June 24.
Pool Play
Game 1 - West Salem 5 - PdC 2
West Salem scored 2 runs in the fourth inning, 2 in the fifth and 1 in the sixth. PdC scored 1 in the second and 1 in the 6th.
Cory Check started on the mound and pitched 5 innings taking the loss. He had 4 strikeouts and 6 walks. Jacob Joy came on in relief for the final two innings.
Gavin Gillitzer was 3x4 and Hunter Davis was 2x3 to lead the Hoppers at the plate.
Game 2 - PdC 1 - Viroqua 0
PdC scored its lone run in the sixth inning. Gavin Gillitzer pitched a complete game gem. He had 8 strike outs, 1 walk, and two hits allowed.
Jon Dyer was 2x2 and scored the winning run. Cory Check had the big hit to drive in Dyer.
Game 3 - PDC 10 - Union Grove 1
PdC scored 2 in the first, 4 in the third, 3 in the fourth, and 1 in the fifth. Union Grove scored its lone run in the first.
Ryan McGrath pitched a complete game with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks. He only gave up 1 hit in the game.
Gavin Gillitzer was 2x3 with 2 doubles, Clayton Ducharme was 2x2, Cory Check was 2x3, and Hunter Davis was 2x3.
PdC and Viroqua were tied at the end of pool play with 2-1 records. PdC won the tie breaker which was head to head.
PdC advanced to the championship game Sunday night.
Championship Game
PdC 8 - Onalaska 1
PdC scored 1 in the first, 1 in the second, 2 in the fifth, and 4 in the sixth. Onalaska scored 1 in the third.
Jacob Joy pitched 4 1/3 strong innings earning the win. He had 1 strikeout and 3 walks. Jon Dyer came on in relief, finishing the game.
The PdC defense highlighted the night with 3 inning-ending double plays to get out of some jams.
Gavin Gillitzer was 2x4, Jon Dyer was 2x4 with a triple, Cory Check was 2x3 with a double and Tyler Smock was 3x3 on the night.
PdC is now 7-1 on the year. Next up is a home game June 25 at 6 p.m. against LaCrescent.
