Donald Berns

Donald Francis Berns age 81, of Garnavillo, IA, died Monday, April 9, 2018, at Elkader Care Center in Elkader, IA. 

Don was born July 25, 1936, in Monona, son of Raymond and Mae (Farmer) Berns. He attended high school graduating with the class of 1954. Don entered into the United States Army Serving from October 1955 until his discharge in October of 1958. Don met and married the love of his life Carolyn Kilnkenberg on October 24, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo. To this union two children were born, Lee and Dee. Don spent most of his life farming the land that he raised his family on. He enjoyed spending time with the love of his life, his children and his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lee Berns of Garnavillo, Dee (John) Hense of Strawberry Point, grandchildren; NaTasha, Dustin (fiancé Kara Winch), Dalton Berns, Matthew Hense; one great grand-daughter Adaline Marie Berns, three sisters; Marilyn (Jim) Kann of Garnavillo, Jane (David) Siegel of Cedar Rapids, Jeanette (Pat) Thein of Colesburg plus many other nieces, nephews; relatives and friends.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, wife Carolyn in 2015, brother, Norman Berns, and sister Mary Schmitz.

Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, IA, where the family received friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:55 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2018. Funeral service was at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home Garnavillo, IA, at 11 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2018, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.
