Joyce Hedemann, 90, of Monona, Iowa died Friday, Feb. 23, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. 

 

Joyce was born Jan. 31, 1928, to Rueben and Clara (Schelhamer) Bernhard on the Clayton County farm settled by her great-grandparents in 1855. She graduated from Monona High School in 1946 and attended one year at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. 

 

Joyce was united in marriage with Darrell Hedemann on June 28, 1947, at Giard Methodist Church in Giard. Four children were born to this union. Joyce was a farmwife and homemaker and was very active in the Giard United Methodist Church and Monona Historical Society. She was a member of Giard United Methodist Women, Froelich U and I Club and the Northern Clayton Garden Club.

 

Joyce is survived by three children, Hugh (Joanne) Hedemann, of Garnavillo, Janice (Stephen Mangano) Hedemann, of Halethorpe, Md., and Susan (Michael) McGee, of Cedar Falls; six grandchildren, Cheryl, Andrea, Erin, Charles, Anna and Claire; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Doris Moellering, of Garnavillo.

 

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Clara Bernhard; husband, Darrell Hedemann in 2006; one son, Mark Hedemann in 1969; and her infant brother, Wesley Bernhard.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona. There will also be a one-hour visitation before services at the church on Wednesday. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Living Faith United Methodist Church, Giard, with Rev. Deb Parkison as the Officiant. Burial will follow at Giard Cemetery. Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Monona, is helping the family with arrangements.
