Edward William Coobs

Edward William Coobs, 81, of Elkader, died unexpectedly on Dec. 17, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Ed was born in Elkader, in 1936, and graduated from Central Community High School in 1955. He married Doris Rodenberg on Jan. 26, 1957, and four children were born into their union: Earl (Liwen) Coobs, Billings, Mont., Donna (Charles) Strange, North Liberty, Eric (Lori) Coobs, Billings, Mont., and Evan (Karen) Coobs, Champaign, Ill. Ed and Doris divorced 13 years later.
Ed, then, married Sandra Lamphier on Oct. 20, 1973, and seven years later, bringing one child into their union: Cory (Tricia) Coobs, North Liberty.
He is survived by his wife, Sandi; his five children; twelve grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley (Don) Marmann, Farmersburg, and Dorothy Thompson, Muscatine; and many friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, William and Gladys (Glawe) Coobs; brother, Donald; sister-in-law, Becky; brother-in-law, Verdean Thompson; and stepson, Sean Lamphier.
Visitation and memorial services will be held at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. On Friday, Jan. 19, the family will be present for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m., with open Masonic services held at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 20, the family will be present for visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m., with memorial services to be held at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to those organizations that were important to Ed: Shriners Hospital for Children; Peace United Church of Christ, Elkader; or Central Community Hospital/Central Ambulance Service in Elkader.
