The race for Marquette Council was so close following the Nov. 7 election that it had to be decided with a tie-breaker.

Marquette voters cast 87 votes for incumbent Cindy Sharp Halvorson, while newcomer Ryan P. Young received 83, giving the candidates two of the three available seats on the council. The third was harder to decide, however, as both incumbent John Ries and David Schneider earned 76 votes. The county supervisors randomly selected Ries during the canvass of votes Nov. 13. Other council candidates included Rinda Ferguson and incumbent Steve Eagle, who received 74 and 57 votes, respectively. Halvorson, Young and Ries will serve four-year terms.

Marquette’s mayoral race was also contested, with Stephen J. Weipert coming out ahead of current mayor Larry Breuer for a two-year term. Weipert garnered 94 votes and Breuer 59.

In McGregor, the city council race was nearly as close as Marquette’s. Incumbent Janet Hallberg picked up 103 votes to win the first of three available seats. Fellow incumbent Charles Carroll took the second with 88 votes. Rogeta Halvorson, also an incumbent, was narrowly elected to the third, receiving 65 votes to newcomer Sally K. Schneider’s 64. Hallberg, Carroll and Halvorson will all serve four-year terms.

Mayor Harold Brooks was again re-elected to a two-year term, with 113 votes.

In Monona, Lynn Martinson ran unopposed for mayor, and received 138 votes. His term will be two years.

For the Monona Council, Heather Lange was elected to fill a vacancy, with 122 votes. She will now serve a two-year term.

Two seats were also available for four-year terms on the council, but no candidates submitted papers to be included on the ballot. Three, instead, ran write-in campaigns. Preston Landt earned the most votes, at 57, while incumbent Doug Bachman received 53 and Tim Wright 46.

In Luana, mayor Jerry Schroeder was elected to another two-year term, after garnering 21 votes.

Incumbents Brenda Boddicker and Paul L. Miller were also re-elected to four-year terms on the council, with 21 and 19 votes, respectively.

Incumbent Glenn Radloff will again serve as Farmersburg’s mayor after receiving 20 votes. The term is for two years.

For the Farmersburg Council, incumbent Ron Dennler picked up 19 votes, for the first of two available four--year seats. Daniel Torkelson earned 13 write-in votes.
