On October 17 the Central volleyball team played its first round regional game at Ed-Co.

“Ed-Co has been one of the top teams in the area for many years so we knew it was going to be an intense match and we had to keep our errors to a minimum,” Coach Derek Bergan said.

Both sides came out a little sloppy in the first set as there were a lot of missed serves by both teams. Central settled in and was able to win the first set 25-21. In the second set the Warriors took control early and won the by a score of 25-15.

“Having a 2-0 set lead is always great, but we have struggled this year to finish off that final set and the game ended up being similar, as we dropped two close sets 25-21 and 25-23,” Coach Bergan continued. “We had our opportunities to take the lead in both sets, but just couldn’t quite get over the hump. This put us in a final deciding 5th set where we had been 0-2 so far this year. Ed-Co had the momentum from the last two sets and came out and got a lead 4-2. We kept our composure and ended up winning the final set 15-13.”

Lizzie Gifford had a big night for Central with 24 kills, while Gabbi Lenth and Kristi Eberhardt were also in double digits with 12 and 10, respectively.  Natalie Schroeder had 9 kills and Ariel Dennler had 3. Mary Kate Wille once again paced the team defensively with her hustle in the back row and had 33 digs. Hannah Erickson had a busy night moving the ball around for Central effectively with 55 assists.

“This is the second year in a row that we have won our first round game,” Coach Bergan commented.
