The Prairie du Chien Common Council approved at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 19, an extension of the Class B liquor license held by the former Sue Z’s Bar, at 1000 S. Beaumont Rd., with interest in making the property more marketable. The premises has, for more than 50 years, operated as a tavern. It was last in operation as Bobbleheads Bar for a short period of time.

According to a memo from Zoning Administrator Cassie Rickleff, the current title holder is Peoples State Bank, which took ownership in April 2017. The transfer came upon an agreement the bank made with petitioner Susan (Zuerbuchen) Selch. Peoples is currently attempting to market the premises. Both Peoples and the previous owner believe keeping the license will allow greater value for the property. Rickleff’s recommendation seemed to agree with that theory.

The council approved the extension, granting 90 additional days past Sept. 19.

Other business
•After closed session, the council chose to present a proposal to Moto Tire, owned by a local proprietor, to develop in the North Gateway Business Park. “We’re anxious to move forward from here,” City Administrator Art Osten said.
•Due to a proposed expansion of the Scenic Mississippi Regional Transit (SMRT) Bus program, the Opportunity Center in Prairie du Chien agreed to lease a Ford E-450 bus to the city, at no cost, for a three-month pilot period from October through December 2017. According to City Planner Garth Frable, the bus will be used for an expanded route operating on two trips daily to the Sparta/Tomah area.

The pilot phase of this proposed route will help identify the most efficient and effective routes, stops and schedules for the area, Frable said. The pilot also gives SMRT the opportunity to build awareness about the new route. The expanded service will be included in the city’s 2018 grant application.

•Parks and Recreation commission member Monica Horner is relocating outside of the city limits, thus she recently resigned her position. The council voted to approve the commission’s appointment of Beth Wagner as her replacement.

In a statement to the city, she shared her appreciation for the opportunity to learn about how city government works and, “more importantly, how many wonderful resources are available within the PdC Parks and Recreation Department.”
