Construction underway at Prairie du Chien High School
By Ted Pennekamp
Construction has begun on the $18.9 million facilities upgrade project that will involve Prairie du Chien High School, Bluff View Intermediate School and B. A. Kennedy Elementary School.
A fence was placed around the front parking lot at the high school several weeks ago for a staging area for construction materials and equipment. Recently, excavation work, along with the installation of footings has begun on the east side of the high school. High School and B. A. Kennedy Head of Maintenance Luke Lucas said the work is in preparation for the construction of three gymnasiums and a greenhouse.
Lucas said the gymnasiums and greenhouse will take up 31,170 square feet.
As soon as the excavation and footings work is done for the gymnasiums and greenhouse, construction crews will start doing the same thing on the area for the new auditorium, said Lucas. The new auditorium will be on the northwest end of the high school and will be 27,960 square feet.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the high school at noon on Wednesday, April 19.
Olympic Builders of Holmen is the general contractor for the project. August or September of 2018 is the scheduled completion time and occupancy plan.
The general overall project involves construction of a new 750-seat auditorium, a new greenhouse, new gymnasiums and support space at the high school; and a gym annex, support space, instrumental music space and technical education space at Bluff View. There will also be playground improvements at Bluff View, along with parking improvements and site upgrades. At B. A. Kennedy, there will be remodeling, renovation and other improvements. Some of the highlights at B. A. Kennedy include numerous upgrades to the library and upgrades to a first grade restroom.
