Multiple people were injured Wednesday, Oct. 7, in an afternoon accident near the intersection of Eagle Drive and Highway 18, near the Breezy Pointe Subdivision, west of Marquette.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, the accident occurred when a Chrysler van driven by Tanya Wolcott, 29, of West Union, heading westbound on Highway 18, pulled to the right side of the road to yield to a fire truck exiting the subdivision. A Chevy Impala, driven by Dorothy Naber, 75, of Cedar Falls, was following the Wolcott vehicle, but was unable to stop, striking the Wolcott vehicle in the rear.

Naber and her passenger, George Naber, 77, also of Cedar Falls, were transported via EMS to Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien with injuries. The report said the Wolcott van had several passengers, including another adult and four young children, who were later taken to the hospital via a private vehicle.

Several McGregor Hook and Ladder trucks were already in the area at the time of the accident, responding to a reported explosion that occurred in the woods between Breezy Pointe and the highway.

A Breezy Pointe resident, who called 911, said she heard a big boom, then saw smoke rising from the woods.

According to McGregor Fire Chief Jerry Thornton, the noise and smoke were created when a brush pile was set ablaze. There was no damage or injuries.

Fire trucks and emergency crews responding to the scene found it difficult to reach the secluded area, first attempting to access it from Breezy Pointe, then heading back to the highway. As one of the trucks, exhibiting its lights and sirens, entered the highway, the accident occurred.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Mar-Mac Police Department, McGregor Hook and Ladder, Mar-Mac EMS and Tri-State Ambulance.
