Burkle honored for 11 years on school board

The MFL MarMac School Board honored Patty Burkle at its Oct. 12 meeting, recognizing her 11 years of service on the board. Burkle, who chose not to run for re-election in September, was most recently the board president. She said she enjoyed her time on the school board and encouraged other parents to get involved.
Scholarship
Jon Miller, who grew up in the McGregor area and now lives in Pella, presented a permanent scholarship to MFL MarMac from his late parents, Edward and Dorothy Miller, in the name of Gene and Kathleen Milewsky. The Milewskys were neighbors of his parents, and his family thought the world of them, he noted.
The scholarship fund is $25,000 and Miller requested $1,000 be paid out every year, whether as one scholarship or several smaller scholarships. He gave an additional $5,000 to ensure the scholarship provided funds for five more years, until the interest could start contributing.
Principal updates
High School Principal David Ross said fall has been busy with Homecoming, testing and the “Walkin’ the Dogs” event Oct. 7, when students did four laps around the track as part of the governor’s Healthiest State Initiative. The FFA held a blood drive Sept. 29, collecting 105 units, the third highest amount in school history.
McGregor Center Principal Denise Mueller said students’ one-on-one use of laptop computers has been successful, and classes are now able to complete more projects. Those entering school will now notice a new TV, bought by the Stu Crew.
Elementary Principal Kathy Koether said several options are now available to students when they arrive at school in the morning, with some reading, others doing activities and some having access to computers and iPads. Volunteers have been a big help for this and for helping with other reading times, she added.
Administrator update
Superintendent Dale Crozier said the use of air conditioning in the elementary was successful this year, and he would like to work on air conditioning the middle school next year.
