Dr. Donald and Joanne Strutt and their family were honored at McGregor’s Riverfront Park Saturday, as the new shelter was named “The Strutt Family Shelter.”

A number of community members gathered for the dedication, which McGregor Park Board President Maria Brummel said was a “testament to the Strutt family that everyone came out in the hot weather.”

McGregor City Administrator Lynette Sander spoke about the Strutts, noting that “service is truly a word that describes them.” Don not only served the community as a chiropractor over the years, but also as mayor and magistrate and as a member of the Municipal Utilities board and city council. He has also been active with many groups, including the Masons, Kiwanis Club, Jaycees and Methodist Church. Jo has been an active part of the community as well, volunteering on the park and library boards, with the tourism council and as the church choir director. Together, Don and Jo raised five children and were also owners of the North Iowa Times.

“We’re truly grateful they chose McGregor as their hometown,” Sander said. “They’ve made it a great place to live.”

Following Sander’s remarks, Mayor Harold Brooks gave a proclamation and unveiled the plaque naming the shelter in honor of the family.

“It will be a good place for family and friends to gather to enjoy the beautiful Mississippi,” he said.

Following the dedication, those in attendance enjoyed a potluck meal as well as music provided by the River City Ruckus Band.
