Duane Henry Engelhardt, formerly of St. Olaf, died March 30, 2015, in Summit, NJ, following a long battle with cancer.

Duane was a man with a loving heart for his wife of 57 years, Norma; three sons, Mark (Laura), Kevin (Tracey) and Jeff (Diane); eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Duane was born July 1, 1936, in St. Olaf, where he was raised. He was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, on August 9, 1936. Duane and Norma were married August 24, 1958, at the First Presbyterian Church, Morris, IL.

Duane and Norma resided in Springfield, NJ, for the past 49 years. Duane is also survived by his brother James (Patricia) of Milwaukee, WI, and his sister (Phyllis (Harlan) Thurn, St. Olaf.

Duane graduated from Luther College in 1958 and earned his graduate degree in nuclear physics and calculus from Vanderbilt University in 1959. He was a tireless worker in the computer and life insurance industries, bringing the first computer system to the New York Stock Exchange in 1986. Besides his passion for sales, Duane was also a Bridge Life Master, and taught and played bridge until his final days. Above all, his greatest love was for his grandchildren.

Duane was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit, NJ, for 49 years, holding multiple leadership positions throughout the church community. Duane was committed to stewardship and was president of the Lutheran Laity Movement from 1986 to 1988.

His faith in God gave him strength to battle multiple illnesses for the past 15 years and is truly an example for us all.

A memorial service was held on April 2 from 2 to 4 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Summit.
