Four Prairie du Chien police officers and a detective were recently recognized by the city’s police and fire commission for their lifesaving actions in 2014.

On Feb. 26, during a joint meeting of the police department and the police and fire commission, Officers Ashley Erickson, Steve Herbers, Josh Hemmer and Jeff Henry, as well as Detective Stacy Polodna, were presented lifesaving award pins for their efforts on three separate calls last year.

According to Police Chief Chad Abram, the complete details of each incident could not be revealed due to confidentiality matters. However, the events occurred as follows:

Officer Ashley Erickson and Officer Steve Herbers were dispatched to a residence and were able to force entry into a house, assisting EMS in providing treatment to a citizen who was not responding at the door.
While on routine patrol, Officer Josh Hemmer was able to vacate several people and pets from a residence from which he saw smoke coming. The residents were unaware there was a fire.

Officer Jeff Henry and Detective Stacy Polodna made entry into a residence and assisted in saving the life of someone who was not responding at the door and had attempted suicide inside the residence.

In addition to their praise, a number of Prairie du Chien’s officers were also honored for their years of service and dedication to the local department. Officer Gerald Tippery was recognized for 35 years of service and Chief Abram was honored for 15 years. Officer Tara Henry has achieved five years on the department and Officer Casey Cox two years.
