The Hawkettes perform their pom routine at the State Dance Competition Feb. 7.

Hawkettes enjoy state competion

Will host Blackhawk Bleacher Bash show Feb. 22

On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Prairie du Chien Hawkette Dance Team competed at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches State Dance Competition held at the La Crosse Center. The girls qualified for state competition by placing in the top half of their divisions the weekend before at regionals. The girls qualified in both the Division 4 pom category and the Division 2 kick category. This is the first year the team has qualified for state in both of the categories they competed at regionals.

At state, the girls placed seventh in the Division 4 pom category out of 13 teams, missing placing in the top five by only 11 points. They placed ninth in the Division 2 kick category out of 13 teams.

Coach Kelli Saxe said, “The girls did a fantastic job with their performances at state. The competition was stiff. The girls performed their best and looked great. We were proud that we came out ahead of all the teams we beat at regionals plus another team that beat us at regionals. It was a very fun and rewarding day. I am so proud of all of the hard work the girls have put into this year’s season. They have worked their tails off and truly deserved this opportunity. For me personally, this has been one of the most rewarding years of coaching. This year’s seniors have been such good role models and have truly helped motivate the underclassmen to give their all. Not every team gets along and works together as well as this year’s did. I’m just trying to enjoy every last minute of it. We all have so much to be proud of.”

The Hawkettes will showcase all of their routines on Sunday, Feb. 22 at their fifth annual Blackhawk Bleacher Bash at Prairie du Chien High School. This is a show the girls host as a fundraiser that will include performances by themselves, as well as the Prairie du Chien cheerleaders, the Prairie du Chien dance/cheer alumni, the Hawkette Youth Dancers, the Hawkettes’ parents, the Clayton Ridge Drill Team, the Dodgeville cheerleaders, the Randolph High School dance team, Expressions Dance Studio in Iowa, Xpressions Dance Studio in Prairie du Chien, the UW-Platteville cheer and stunt team, and the UW-Platteville Pioneer dance team.

There is a small admission fee to attend the show. Come out to see a fantastic performance and support the girls.
