Fern Alvina (Marting) Schievelbein, 85, of Farmersburg, Iowa, died Monday, February 2, 2015, at Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. She was the daughter of Vern and Hilda (Dettman) Marting and was born January 21, 1930, in Farmersburg township, Clayton County. She was baptized on April 13, 1930, at St. Peters Lutheran Church, National, Iowa by Pastor G. Bunge and was confirmed on June 18, 1944, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmerburg, by Pastor H. Adix. Fern attended Pioneer Country School near Farmersburg through the eighth grade and graduated from Monona High School in 1947. After graduation she was a waitress in Postville and a self-employed seamstress.

On November 19, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lendall Arno Schievelbein at Zion American Lutheran Church, Waterloo, Iowa, with Pastor H. Adix officiating. To this union two daughters, Monica and Jeanne, were born. Fern farmed with her husband for 59 years in the Farmersburg area, helping with their livestock operation and seed corn dealership.

Fern was a member of St. John ALCW in Farmersburg. She taught sewing classes and was a leader for the Happy Hustlers 4-H club for many years. She was employed at Monona Wire Corporation, Monona, Iowa for eleven years. Lendall and Fern enjoyed years of horse drawn buggy rides and four-wheeling. In her retirement years she enjoyed making quilts and wall hangings for her family and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren traveling, fishing and enjoying the outdoors.

Fern is survived by her husband; Lendall; two children, Monica (John) Myers of Evandale, Iowa, and Jeanne (Bill) Zittergruen of Garber, Iowa, three grandchildren, Joshua (Candy) Zittergruen of Edgewood, Iowa, Gabriel (Andrea) Zittergruen of Elkader, Iowa, and Nicole Myers of Evansdale, Iowa, eight great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Glenda Henkes of Monona, Iowa.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents and two infant grandsons, Fredrick Zittergruen and Amos Myers

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa with a two-hour visitation before services at the church on Thursday.

Burial will later at National Cemetery, National, Iowa.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa, is helping the family with the arrangements.
