Esther M. Hamann, 88, of Prairie du Chien passed away in her sleep Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015. 

She was born Dec. 7, 1926 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of John V. and Amelia (Berentgen) Check. She married Harold “Brownie” Hamann on Sept. 10, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 12, 2007. Esther cooked for Dunbar’s Café in Prairie du Chien and later for St. Gabriel’s School for many years. She was an active member of St. Gabriel’s and a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. 

She is survived by her son Dean (Pam) Hamann of Millville; her daughters, Doris (Roger) Moore and Denise (Shane) Toberman both of Prairie du Chien and Dixie (Rick Allbee) Hamann of Potosi; her brothers, Bill (Wanda) and Jack (Pat) Check both of Prairie du Chien; her sisters, Mildred (Leo) Zimmerman of Prairie du Chien, Dorothy (Eldon) Zimmerman of Sac City, and Helen Everet of Black Earth; fourteen grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter Debra Hamann; her brother Bob Check and her sister Thelma (Ed) Zimmer.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Church of the Holy Family Parish, Rev. James Weighner officiating with interment in the Calvary Cemetery both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Prairie Catholic Schools. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
