Barbara L. (Kurth) Christianson, age 82, of Guttenberg, IA, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born on September 30, 1931, in rural Farmersburg to Lester and Esther (Klieforth) Kurth.

Betty Jane Garaghty

 

Betty Jane Garaghty, 83, of Elkader, died, Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was born September  8, 1930, in Guttenberg, to Jack and Frances (Wolter) Mahowald. Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Guttenberg.

She was united in marriage to John Garaghty on April 17, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Five children were born to this union. Jane raised her family on the family farm for many years and later moved into Elkader.

The Central girls played their last regular game of the season February 11 against West Central.  A poor defensive first quarter saw Central fall behind 12-2. The girls fired up in the second quarter and tied the game, 20-20 at the half.  In a low scoring third quarter, West Central clung to a 25-24 lead, but Central came back in the fourth and took the game with a score of 40-36.

The Central girls’ basketball team had three games last week.  In a February 2 match-up with Postville, Central took a huge 17-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 25-5 at the half.  The Warriors extended the lead to 41-14 with a quarter left and went on to win the game, 54-24,

Because of the inclement weather, the Central girls had only one game last week, playing MFL MarMac.  The Warriors fell behind 13-3 in the first quarter and trailed 25-12 at the half.  In a fairly evenly matched third quarter, MFL MarMac maintained a 35-21 lead. Central ended up losing the game by a score of 46-30.

Central had three games last week, winning two and losing one.  The week started with a game against the Central City Wildcats January 20. Central City used a sagging man defense to hold off the Warriors in a non-conference game on a night with blizzard like conditions outside, and cold shooting on the inside.
