The Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) selected its 2013 Iowa high school all-state football teams on Sunday, Nov. 24, in Des Moines.
The INA is made up of member newspapers from across the state, and sportswriters from various local weeklies comprise the selection committee choosing the top prep football players making up the three all-state squads. This writer had the opportunity to sit on the selection committee and represent The Guttenberg Press; Clayton Ridge High School and northeast Iowa helping to make those selections in class 1A.
Eight Clayton Ridge football players made the INA all-state squad with four of those selections comprising the first team, two players on offense and two on defense. Last season no Eagles were represented on the INA teams despite having one of the top defensive units in the state.
Perhaps no two players benefited more from the Eagles new spread offense than wide receiver Trey Roehlk and quarterback Kohle Helle. Roehlk was second in class 1A in receiving yards and averaged over 18-yards per catch, and for his outstanding year was named to the first team offense as a wide receiver.
