Donald Coobs

 

Donald D. Coobs, 71, of rural Dixon, Iowa, died Friday, April 25, 2014, at his home. Services in celebration of his life were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Calamus, Iowa, with the Rev. Sarah Kretzman officiating. Jason Bousselor was organist; casket bearers were Marlon VanderHeiden, Jeff VanderHeiden, Jim Tweed, Allan Taylor and Lonnie Sievers.

A visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Davenport. Burial was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

LaVarr Rhomberg

 

LaVarr Marion Schmidt Rhomberg, 77, of Elkader, Iowa was born into eternity Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Floyd County Medical Center, Charles City, Iowa. She was born into life on May 14, 1936, to Bernard and Shirley (Olsen) Kraft in Burlington, Iowa. LaVarr graduated from Burlington High School in 1954.

LaVarr was united in marriage with John Schmidt on October 12, 1957, at St. John the Baptist Church in Burlington, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. John passed away in 1994. LaVarr was then united in marriage with Joseph Rhomberg on December 26, 1996, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa and he passed away in 2013.

Ruth Vigen

 

   Ruth Vigen, 98, of Jefferson, IA, formerly of St. Olaf, IA died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, IA.

She was born on May 3, 1916, in Finley, North Dakota, the daughter of Severt and Ellen Olson Jacobson. Ruth was confirmed and became a member of the Ostervold Evangelical Lutheran Church in ND on June, 1930. On October 22, 1938, she was united in marriage to Maurice Obert Vigen in Portland, ND. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1999.

Dorleen Witt

 

Dorleen E. Witt, 91, of Cedar Falls, Iowa and formerly of Oelwein, Iowa died on Tuesday morning, May 6, 2014, at the Martin Health Center of the Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa with the Rev. Ruth Ratliff officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 9, at the funeral home and after 9 a.m. on Saturday.  Interment was Eastside Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa, at 12 noon on Saturday, May 10.

William “Bill” White

 

William Charles “Bill” White, 83, of Elkader, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center. Bill was born August 7, 1930, in Highland Park, MI, to Clyde and Martha (Shea) White, and he was baptized there. Within his first year of life, the family moved to the family farm in rural Elkader. In 1941, they moved to Dubuque. Bill was confirmed and attended Loras Academy while living there. The family lived in Dubuque until 1948, when they moved back to the family farm. He served honorably in the United States Navy, from 1955 to 1957.

Lora L. Mager, 58, of Elkader, died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at the Strawberry Point Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2014, at the 1st Baptist Church in Dunkerton, Iowa. Interment will follow at  Fairview Cemetery, Dunkerton, Iowa Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Friday.

Joseph Becker

 

Joseph B. Becker, 84, rural Lansing, Iowa, was surrounded by his loving family when he died Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at his home, not 50 feet from where he was born on August 6, 1929, to John H. and Mary (Hammell) Becker. Joseph attended country school in Churchtown for a time and graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing.

Joseph was united in marriage with Kathleen Mauss on May 17, 1950, at St Mary-Lycurgis. Nine children were born to this union. After nearly 46 years of marriage, Kathleen passed away on April 16, 1996. Joseph was later united in marriage to Dorothy Kurth Peterson on September 28, 2002 at Norway Lutheran Church.

Bernice Whittle

 

Bernice Marion Whittle, 86, of Elkader, passed away suddenly, Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born November 11, 1927, rural Garnavillo, to Peter and Marion (Thein) Dutka. Bernice attended country school in rural Garnavillo.

Bernice was united in marriage to Bernell J. Whittle on November 7, 1953, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Three children were born to this union, Stanley, Dwayne and Beverly. The couple farmed in rural Elkader their entire life. She was a homemaker, decorated cakes for special occasions; and she also enjoyed quilting, growing roses, gardening, crocheting and baking.

Ruth Moellers

 

Ruth Marie Baars Clinton Harris Moellers, 95, of Elkader, died peacefully Sunday, April 20, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born May 15, 1918, on the Baars family farm near Volga, to Henry and Katherine (Kuehl) Baars.

Ruth married Vernon Clinton and made her home in Littleport as a homemaker to her husband and six children. After Vernon’s death she later married Hermie Harris. Ruth lived in Communia, where she ran the Communia Country Store for the next 25 years before retiring.
