Duane “Sox” O’Brien

 

Duane Francis “Sox” O’Brien, 90, of Volga, died Thursday, April 3, 2014, at his residence in Volga. He was born June 11, 1923, in Volga to Frank Leonard and Cecile Mary (White) O’Brien. He graduated from Volga High School in 1940. Sox farmed the family farm and did carpentry work as the “O” in ET&O Construction, starting in the 1960s. He especially remembered the first house they constructed which was for Wally Oldfather in Manchester, Iowa. They were quite a crew, with Hugh Tenney and HH (Pete) Eder providing wit and commentary as the various projects progressed. In retirement, Sox and LaMae operated the O’Brien Grocery in Volga until the flood of 1999.

Patricia Waterman

 

Patricia Ann Waterman, 70, of East Dubuque, passed away on January 13, 2014, at Manorcare Health Services in Dubuque, of lung cancer. She suffered from chronic pain for almost a year before being diagnosed. Even though she was in pain most days she never let it get her down.

 She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, and her close companion, Ray Leppert.

Dean Possehl

 

Dean Possehl, 66, of Apple Valley, MN, formerly of Elkader, passed away peacefully at his home on March 17, 2014, after a short, but fierce battle with cancer.

Dean Edward Passel was born July 20, 1947 to Ralph and Lenora (Olson) Passel in rural Wagner Township, Clayton County, near Elkader, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children. He attended kindergarten through high school at Central Community Schools in Elkader where he played football and ran track, which he loved, setting a school relay record that held for many years.

Betty Olson

 

Betty L. Olson, 73, of Marion, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, Cedar Rapids. The Rev. Linda Livingston officiated. There was a visitation Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 4 to 6 p.m. and on Wednesday at the chapel after 10 a.m.

Shirley Kutzbach death notice

 

Shirley Marguerite Kutzbach, 88, of Farmersburg, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wisconsin after an extended illness. Shirley was born on November 14, 1925, to Ernie and Bertha (Leinau) Moon at the family farm in rural Monona, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and remained a faithful and active member her entire life. She attended school at the Evergreen Grove Country School near their home, walking through rain and snow with her brothers, sisters and school mates.

Francis Henry Wagner, 90, Elkader, Iowa formerly of Lansing, Iowa died Monday, March 17, 2014, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa. Francis was born on September 9, 1923, in Lafayette Township, rural Lansing, Iowa to Henry and Mary (Donahue) Wagner. He attended Russell Country School through the eighth grade.

Shirley Kutzbach, 88, of Farmersburg, died Saturday,  March 22. Services were held Wednesday, March 26, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Farmersburg.

Dean Harold Knight

 

Dean Harold Knight, 81 of Strawberry Point, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at his home in Strawberry Point, surrounded by his family.

Dean was the oldest child of Harold Myron Knight and Leonore Irene (Wiltse) Knight. He was born August 11, 1932, in the brick house on the Knight farm east of Strawberry Point. He started school in September 1938 at the Lodomillo #4 School that was just across the field from their home. Dean completed kindergarten through eighth grade there with Dorothy Smith as his teacher.

Betty Jane Garaghty

 

Betty Jane Garaghty, 83, of Elkader, died, Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was born September 8, 1930, in Guttenberg, to Jack and Frances (Walter) Mahowald. Jane graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Guttenberg.

She was united in marriage to John Garaghty on April 17, 1956, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Four children were born to this union. Jane raised her family on the family farm for many years and later moved into Elkader.
