Marleen Heuer

Marleen June Heuer, 78, passed away on Thursday morning, December 22, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader after a series of illnesses.

She was born on the family farm, rural Garnavillo, on June 8, 1938, to Arno and Mabel (Kelpien) Heuer.

Marlene attended county school near her home and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1956. She lived and worked on the farm until her recent move to Elkader. For a time she worked in Monona and Guttenberg.

Irving Ringdahl

Irving Clayton Ringdahl, 92, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2016 at McKee Hospital in Loveland, CO. He was born in McVille, North Dakota on March 7, 1924. The oldest of Dorothy and Henry Ringdahl’s 10 children, from an early age he was known to be hard-working, kind, patient, humble, and a gifted learner. Growing up on his family’s farm during the Great Depression, Irving always said he felt lucky because sleeping on a cot in the hall made him feel “as if I had a room all to myself.”

Jon A. Burlingame

A longtime Prairie du Chien businessman, Jon A. Burlingame, 75, passed away Thursday, December 15, 2016, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien.  He was born July 3, 1941 in Elkader, IA the son of Edward and Blanche (Bailey) Burlingame.  He married Carol Nelson on December 21, 1963 in Lincoln, NE.  Jon served in the US Air Force from 1963 until 1967.  

Jon was a talented musician who owned and operated the Main Entrance in Prairie du Chien for 27 years.  He enjoyed giving budding musicians a chance to play at his establishment.

Yvonne Nelson

Yvonne Nelson, 91, of Elkader, died Sunday, December 4, 2016, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born in Ayrshire, Iowa, January 7, 1925, to Hilda (Kuehl) and Dr. William Dohrer. Yvonne was baptized at Friedens Evangelical Church in Elkader and confirmed April 2, 1939, by Rev. Paul Kitterer at the same church. Yvonne attended grade school in Ayrshire, Iowa, Elizabeth Town, Kentucky, and graduated from Elkader High School in 1942.

Margie Larson

Margie Nell Larson, 89, of Elkader, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Margie Nell Esther (Schuety) Larson was born September 30, 1927, in Boardman Township, to Emil and Hilda (Lahrs) Schuety. She was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Margie went to country school.

On July 8, 1948, she was united in marriage to Henry Larson Jr. at the Peace church parsonage in Elkader. Four children were born to this union.

Marilyn Berns

Marilyn Berns, 91, of Elkader, died Friday, December 9, 2016, at the Elkader Care Center. 

She was born April 22, 1925, in rural Elkader to Jake Martin Steen and Mahaly (Knuth) Steen-Wolters.

She graduated from Elkader High School in 1943. Marilyn was united in marriage to Carroll William Berns on May 25, 1948.   The couple was blessed with three children.

Mervin Larson

Although he looked forward to “triple digits,” Mervin Harold Larson, 94, of rural Gunder, died Saturday, November 19, 2016, at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, Iowa. He was born March 30, 1922, in Highland Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to Adolph and Anna Marie “Mary” (Johnson) Larson. Mervin was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elkader where in 1900 his great grandfather was a founding member.

Karen Walch

Karen Rae Ann (Kammerer) “Ruby” Walch, 70, of Elkader, Iowa, entered into heaven peacefully in her home early Sunday morning November 13, 2016, after a short battle with cancer. Karen, or lovingly known to her friends and family as “Ruby” was the first born child to Raymond and Bernadine (Ashelin) Kammerer of Winona, MN. She was born October 9, 1946, in Winona.

Emily Schmidt

Emily C. Schmidt passed away peacefully on November 11, 2016. Emily was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Gertrude Caroline (Mott) Phillips and Harold Thomas Phillips on June 22, 1929. In her early years the family moved to Baxter, Iowa, where Harold was a pharmacist and then moved to Davenport, Iowa ,when Harold took jobs as a pharmacist with Walgreen’s and Rexall Drugs. Some of Emily’s longest, strongest and dearest friendships were formed from her years growing up in Davenport.

Florene Ellen Klostboer

Florene Ellen Klosterboer, 92, of Decorah, Iowa died November 8, 2016 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. She was a resident there since 2005. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 19th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah with a visitation the evening before from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. Her remains will be laid to rest at Phelps Cemetery in Decorah. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Lutheran Services in Iowa.
