George Celestine Miller

 

George Celestine Miller, 98, of Elkader, Iowa passed away on August 25, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader. George was born on June 9, 1915, in West Union, the son of Henry and Sara Jane (Foley) Miller. George attended and graduated from West Union High School in 1934. Following high school, George attended Iowa State College for one year and finished his education with a degree in dairy manufacturing from Purdue University School of Agriculture.

Marion Bink Harn

 

Marion Ida Bink Harn died at Mesa Verde Convalescent Center, Costa Mesa, California, on August 10, 2013, at the age of 101. Born May 10, 1912, in Elkader, Iowa, to Leonard Michael and Rose Katherine Poull Bink, she was the youngest of seven children. She was a student at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Elkader and in 1934 graduated from Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, with majors in speech and English. In addition to the degree from Clarke, Marion also studied reading at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.

Aloys Berns

 

Aloys J. Berns, age 76, of Garnavillo, died Sunday, August 18, 2013, at Guttenberg Care Center from Alzheimer’s disease. He was born March 2, 1937, to Louis and Clara (Harter) Berns on the family farm near Garnavillo.

Al graduated from the Garnavillo High School in 1955, farmed with his family and was a trucker for many years. On May 21, 1958, he was united in marriage with Rosemary Bonert at St. Peter and Paul Church in Petersburg, Iowa. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family.

Robert James “Jim” Duff, 98, of Volga City, died Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Elkader Care Center. Jim was born September 13, 1914, in Highland Township, rural Volga City, to Robert and Harriet (Goodwin) Duff. He received his education at the Duff Country School.

Richard John Katschkowsky

 

Richard John Katschkowsky 79, of Northbrook, IL, formerly of Elkader, died Friday, August 16, 2013, at his home in Northbrook. He was born October 6, 1933, the last of seven children of William and Dorothy (Reinhardt) Katschkowsky. Richard graduated from Elkader High School and attended college for two years.

Bernard Loftsgard

 

Bernard Gene Loftsgard, 84, of Clermont, Iowa passed away Monday, August 12, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa surrounded by his family. He was born June 7, 1929, in Marion Township, Clayton County, Iowa to Gilbert and Bessie (Larson) Loftsgard.  He was baptized on August 4, 1929, and confirmed on June 27, 1943 by Rev. S.J. Strandjord at the Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa where he was a lifetime member.  He attended Marion Township Country School  and Elgin High School.  He was raised in Gunder and lived in the area his entire life.

Karen Wright

 

Karen Wright, 74, of Monona, formerly of Clayton Center, died Sunday, August 11, 2013, at the Guttenberg Care Center. She was born June 19, 1939, in rural Farmersburg, to Lester and Esther (Kliefoth) Kurth. Karen graduated from Luana High School with the Class of 1957.

She was united in marriage to John Clifford (Jack) Wright on December 12, 1958 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo. Eight children were born to this union.

Kenneth W. Miller

 

Kenneth W. Miller, 84, of New Hampton, IA died on Friday, August 2, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at Conway-Markham Funeral Home in New Hampton with Pastor Kevin Frey officiating.
