Audrey Palmquist Aga

 

Audrey Louise Palmquist Aga passed away on September 9, 2014, at the Jones Harrison Assisted Living facility after a stroke. She was a music teacher, choir director, pianist, and church organist. It is difficult to calculate the number of lives she touched through music.

Steven Lee Lau, 66, of Manchester, IA, died Sunday, August 31, 2014, at his home. He was born on August 6, 1948, in Guttenberg to Merrill and Adele Lau. Steve grew up in Guttenberg and graduated from the Guttenberg High School with the class of 1966. While in school, Steve was an excellent athlete. He is responsible for many high school records. He played for many area baseball and softball teams, and played in the city basketball league for many years.  He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army as a medic in Vietnam.

Donald Elvers


Donald Elvers

 

Donald Elvers, 83, of rural Elkader, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Donald Dean Elvers was born on July 19, 1931, near Littleport, IA to Otto and Marie Dohrer Elvers. He was baptized at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran church in Elkport. Don farmed with his father in early life and was educated in a one-room country school through eighth grade. He graduated from Postville High School in 1949. 

In January of 1955, he was married to Ervey Engelhardt at St. Paul Lutheran church in Postville. She passed away in August of 1990. No children were born to this union.

Ilo Rodenberg


Ilo Rodenberg

 

Ilo Anna (Nuehring) Rodenberg, 90, of Garnavillo, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at Guttenberg Care Center. She was born the daughter of the Verni and Louise (Geuder) Nuehring, on September 11, 1923, near Guttenberg.

Ilo received her education from the Jolly Ridge Country School, and worked various jobs before becoming a school cook for the Garnavillo Community School. She was very active in the St. Peter Lutheran Church, singing in the choir, quilting for Lutheran relief, and also was head of the meal site, president of Senior Citizen and Red Cross Blood Mobil Coordinator for many years.

Lyla Quick

 

Lyla D. Quick, 71, former resident of Elkader died at her home in Brownsville, Texas on Tuesday September 2, 2014. She was born February 4, 1943, the only child of Lela and Lyle Boham. 

Lyla graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1962 and married Thomas G. Quick in Galena, IL on January 12, 1970.

Tom died on March 29, 2008.

Verna Strampe

 

Verna Maxine Strampe, 91, of Brunswick, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at Hospice of the Golden Isles.

Mrs. Strampe was born in Aurelia, Iowa, on October 28, 1922, to Frank and Lillian Herr Stewart. She attended elementary and high school in Alta, Iowa, and received a BA degree in Education from Buena Vista University. She served with the United States Marine Corp during World War II, and taught school in Iowa for 35 years.

Mary Connors

 

Mary Margaret (Dunn) Conners Larkin died peacefully in her sleep on August 18, 2014. She was born on August 28, 1926 to Josephine & Peter Dunn in Elkader, Iowa. She had one brother, Bishop Francis Dunn who preceded her in death. 

Mary shared 36 wonderful years with her husband Robert Conners, until he passed away in 1986. She married Dr. Charles Larkin in 1991 and has shared the last 23 years happily with him.

Funeral services for Marlene Graves, 74, were held Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Peck Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rob Jackson officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing. Burial was at Burningtree Memorial Gardens. Visitation was held Saturday, August 23, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Elizabeth “Liz” Monks, of Elkader Iowa, 97 years of age, beloved mother and grandmother, died of congestive heart failure on August 20, 2014, at the Kavanagh House, Des Moines, Iowa. She was also known to many in Elkader as “Sis.”

Patricia Matt obituary

 

Lifetime resident of Elkader, Patricia Ann (Hyde) Matt, 80 died peacefully on August 5 at the Elkader Care Center after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born November 1, 1933 in Elkader to LeRoy and Elsie (Perry) Hyde. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School through grade school and graduated from the Elkader Public School in 1952. She was a second-generation drummer in the high school band.
