Verdean Dietrich

 

Verdean Lyndall Dietrich, 70, of Garnavillo, Iowa, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, Iowa.

Verdean was born on March 3, 1944 to Cornelius and Pearl (Schloetzer) Dietrich in Rural Elkader, IA. He attended school in Guttenberg until the 10th grade and later obtained his GED. Verdean was united in marriage to Bonnie LaDage on February 8, 1964, in Marion, Iowa and were blessed with three children; Brian, Janadene, and Shelley.

George E. Maier

 

George E. Maier, 96, of Garber, Iowa, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa.  George Emil, the son of Emil and Anna Marie (Schaub) Maier was born November 25, 1917, on his family’s farm near Littleport, Iowa.  George attended country school, Volga Township # 7.  He served with the U.S. Army’s Sixth Division in the South Pacific during World War II.  After his return from the war, George farmed the Beck farm near Elkport, Iowa.  In 1948, he moved to the Gerloff farm near Garber and farmed until his retirement.

William H. Crane

 

William H. Crane, 91, of rural Mederville, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg. He was born January 1, 1923, to William Peter and Cora (Thurber) Crane, in Pony Hollow, rural Elkader. Bill attended country school in Pony Hollow and Elkader High School. He was united in marriage to Florence Yonda in 1949, and they later divorced.

Bill was a farmer his whole life. He enjoyed dancing and fishing.

Valene Lau

 

In Loving memory of Mom, we submit a summary of her life.  She was born in her maternal grandmother’s home in Guttenberg, Iowa on October 2, 1934. She grew up on the family farm near Clayton Center. After graduating valedictorian of her 1952 Garnavillo High School class, she moved to Dubuque to attend business school, but her favorite memory of that time was working in the music store. She loved music, especially Ray Price and Roy Clark.

John “Jack” Dittmer

 

John D. “Jack” Dittmer, 86, of Elkader, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point. He was born January 10, 1928, in Elkader, Iowa, to LeRoy and Helen (Schmidt) Dittmer. Jack grew up in Elkader, graduating from the Elkader High School in 1946. During the summer of 1945, Sec Taylor of the Des Moines Register nominated Jack to play in the U.S. All-American East-West baseball game in New York City. Jack’s coach for the East Team was Ty Cobb; the West Team was coached by Babe Ruth.

Donald Wille

Donald W. Wille, 80, of rural Garnavillo, died unexpectedly on May 17, 2014, while attending a family celebration. He was born February 13, 1934, son of Leo and Susan (Meyers) Wille. He attended St. Mary School. In 1954, Donald served his country with the United States Army as a generator mechanic in Germany until 1956, during which time he purchased his beloved (and now restored) 1956 Volkswagen Beetle to road trip through Europe with his Army buddies who quickly became lifelong friends.

Raymond “Junior” Shulka

 

Raymond “Junior” William Shulka, Jr., 67, of Prairie du Chien, WI, died Sunday, May 18, 2014, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse, WI.  He was born on January 26, 1947 to Raymond Fred and Irene Helen (Horstman) Shulka in Guttenberg, IA where he also attended school. 

Junior enlisted into the United States Army on October 17, 1964.  He was a missile mechanic during his service time.  He was honorably discharged in 1967.  Junior was married to Barbara Uher on September 5, 1969; to this union two children were born, Laura and Travis. They later divorced.

Donald Wille service notice

 

Donald Wille, formerly of Garnavillo, died May 17, 2014. Vistiation will be held at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, starting at 3 p.m. on May 21, 2014. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Guttenberg,  at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at Mt. Olivet cemetery and a luncheon at the church hall.

Laura Marie Larson

 

Captain Laura Marie Larson, 46, died May 9, at Creighton University Medical Center after battling ovarian cancer.  

Laura was born to Ralph and Joanne Hammel Larson at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Waukon. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic school through sixth grade before graduating from Waukon High School in 1986.

Wilma Brink

 

Wilma A. Brink, 94 of rural Elkader, Iowa died Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. Wilma Alberta, the daughter of Joseph and Zana (Fish) Rau was born August 23, 1919, in Fayette, Iowa. She graduated from Stanley High School 1936 and was the senior class president.
