Donald F. Check

Donald F. Check, age 73, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, February 12, 2023 at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. He was born in Prairie du Chien on January 6, 1950, the son of Arnold and Adeline (Enke) Check. Donald was born and raised in Prairie du Chien on the dairy farm that has been in their family for nearly a century. He attended Irish Ridge Country School before graduating from Prairie du Chien High School with the class of 1968. He then went on to achieve his Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse before working as a teacher at Longfellow Middle School, as well as the high school level, both in Lacrosse, WI. After teaching, he returned to the dairy farm where he took great pride in the genetics of his animals, producing some of the finest Holstein cows in the state of Wisconsin.

Robert E. “Bob” Smrcina

Robert E. “Bob” Smrcina, 87, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, February 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born on July 27, 1935, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the son of George and Mary (Tesar) Smrcina. He spent much of his childhood with his many cousins getting into just the right amount of trouble. After graduation from Prairie du Chien High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  Bob served from 1954 - 1958 and was stationed in Chateauroux, France for two years. He was proud of his military service and was lucky enough to participate in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Tanya L. Bode

Tanya L. Patnode, age 48, of Rochester, MN passed away February 4, 2023 at Mayo Clinic.
She was born in Prairie Du Chien, WI on August 2, 1974, the daughter of Patti Patnode and Mark Hill. Tanya worked at Assisi Heights in Rochester since 2015. Tanya absolutely loved her job and all of the friends she gained over the years due to Assisi Heights. She was the most caring, strong, funny, and independent woman. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and daughter.
She is survived by her children - Preslie Johnston of Copperas Cove TX, Chayden Bode of Rochester MN, and Parker Johnston of Beaumont TX; her grandchildren - Kamden and Levana; her siblings - James Hill of Dodge Center MN, Angela Mueller of Muscoda WI, and Joey Hill of Viroqua WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents - Patti Patnode and Mark Hill; her grandparents – Lieselotte and Donald Patnode.

John L. Warland

John L. Warland, age 75 of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Turtle Lake, WI, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Turtle Lake, WI on January 10, 1948, the son of Buster and Louise (Johnson) Warland. John grew up in Turtle Lake as the 4th generation of the Warland family and graduated from Turtle Lake High School with the class of 1966. He then completed one year of college at Concordia University before going to serve 2 terms in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home from service, he joined the Turtle Lake Police Department, where he massed over 20 years of service. He spent the last 10 years of his law enforcement career as the Chief of Police in Turtle Lake until retirement. John later moved to Prairie du Chien where he married Darla Warland on December 4, 2004.

Susan Elaine Zimmerman

Susan Elaine Zimmerman, age 68, of Prairie du Chien, Wisc., formerly of Clarksville, Iowa passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Saturday, February 4, 2023 from her battle with brain cancer. Susan was born on May 15, 1954 to Erwin Lawrence Sherburne and Vera Mae Burkhardt. Susan was the oldest of 5 siblings.
Susan went on to get her associates degree in radial technology however ended up working for a few construction and asphalt companies as a business manager. She met her husband, Michael Ray Zimmerman on April 4, 1974 and they were married a few short months later on September 7, 1974.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Zimmerman; her children, Holly (Dana) Miller, Ryan (Carmen) Zimmerman, and Brooke (Jason) Wooldrik; her grandchildren, Leana Zimmerman, Kenna Miller, Ray Wooldrik, and Ryder Wooldrik and her mother, Vera Hoins.

Madonna Eldora (Hill) Wachter passed away peacefully on February 3rd, 2023. She was born on October 29, 1928, in Prairie du Chien, WI, the daughter of Lee and Lucinda (Jones) Hill. She attended public school in Prairie du Chien, graduating in 1946.

Marna A. Zlabek

Marna A. Zlabek, age 82 of Prairie du Chien passed away Thursday, February 2, 2023 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien. She was born in Springfield, IL on April 28, 1940, the daughter of Alva and Audrey (Ross) Harrelson. Marna moved with her family to Prairie du Chien when she was 7 years old. She graduated from Prairie du Chien High School with the class of 1958. She then obtained her business degree from Bayless College in Dubuque, IA. Marna married Dwaine Zlabek on October 28, 1961, at the United Methodist Church in Prairie du Chien. Together, they raised their daughter Rhona in Prairie du Chien. Marna worked at National Decorated Metals in Prairie du Chien before becoming the bookkeeper for Piggly Wiggly, where she stayed for many years. Later she worked at Walmart in the electronic department as well as many other roles when necessary. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church.

Wayne Edmond O’Brien

Wayne Edmond O’Brien, 82 of rural Eastman, Wisc. passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien, Wisc. He was born on June 20, 1940 at the O’Brien home farm on Swatek Ridge Road, Eastman to his parents, Lloyd and Marie O’Brien. Wayne attended schools in Eastman and Seneca, Wis.
When Wayne was younger, he worked in the logging business. He then purchased the family farm from his father and began farming in the Eastman area. Wayne lived his entire life in Eastman and was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Wayne enjoyed farming, bird watching, hunting, fishing, watching sports, and playing cards. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He felt so blessed to have them.

Goldie J. Champion

Goldie J. Champion, age 88 of Prairie du Chien, Wisc. passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Fennimore, Wisc. on June 29, 1934. Goldie moved with her family to Faribault, Minn. where she graduated from high school. She then moved to Rochester, Minn. before eventually returning to southwest Wisc. Goldie married Marvin Champion on June 23, 1962 at the United Methodist Church in Bagley, Wisc. Together, they raised their family in Prairie du Chien. Goldie worked for American Family Insurance before solely caring for her home and family. She enjoyed baking, sewing, garden tractor pulling, and traveling the country with her family. She is survived by her husband of 60 years Marvin; their son Brian Champion; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Orville “Orv” Aspenson

Orville “Orv” Aspenson, 82, of Holmen, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. He was born on February 17, 1940, in the township of Utica to Norman and Lydia (Uglum) Aspenson. He graduated from Seneca High School in 1958 and following graduation, he attended the Farmers Short Course in Madison. Orv married Bernadetta Brown on June 4, 1960, at the Boscobel Methodist Church. Orv enjoyed farming on his family’s farm and worked as a carpenter with Carpenters Local 1143 – La Crosse, Wisc.. He was a jack of all trades and enjoyed various jobs. He had a passion for golf (he was very proud of the two holes in one he had), enjoyed hunting, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife.
