Robert Check

 

 A well known local businessman, Robert John “Bob” Check, 81, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

He was born Nov. 19, 1931 in Eastman, the son of John and Amelia (Berntgen) Check. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Janice Faye White on Nov. 17, 1954 who later preceded him in death on Feb. 20, 1999. Together they owned and operated Check’s Antiques in Prairie du Chien. Bob also worked as a foreman for Design Homes in Prairie du Chien for 26 years. He loved to fish and was known for his homemade soups.

Katherine Klema

 

Katherine A. “Kathy” Klema, 50, of Wauzeka passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, after an extended illness. 

She was born April 23, 1963 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Ronald and Carol (Sebastian) Ore. She married Ed Klema on Oct. 24, 1981 in Prairie du Chien. She worked at several grocery stores in the area and enjoyed bartending at the Sportsman’s Lounge in Wauzeka. Kathy volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader and helped with the Boy Scouts.

Carol King

 

Carol A. King, 68, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. 

She was born Nov. 17, 1944, the daughter of Austin and Eunice (Heins) Newcomb. She grew up on the family dairy farm and later worked for 3M Company in Prairie du Chien.

Robert Cooley

 

Robert L. “Bob” Cooley, 79, of Bloomington passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. 

He was born Feb. 17, 1934 in Grant County, the son of Archibald and Dorothy (Birch) Cooley. He served in the U.S. Army. Bob married Delores DuCharme on July 23, 1955, at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they farmed in the Mt. Hope area for many years. Bob was quite a “horseman” and was an avid coon hunter.

Earl Whittle

 

 Earl G. Whittle, 91, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Elkader passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

He was born Jan. 16, 1922, in Elkader, the son of Clem and Elsie (Kopp) Whittle. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Earl married Ruth Hamilton on Oct. 14, 1950, at St. Rafael’s Cathedral in Dubuque, Iowa. She preceded him in death on their 60 year anniversary on Oct. 14, 2010. Together they farmed in the Elkader, Iowa area for over 30 years before moving to Prairie du Chien in 1980. Earl enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi and was an avid gardener, especially tending his tomatoes. Recently Earl was proud to have participated in the Freedom Flight.

Dennis Lippman

 

 Dennis Lippman, 67, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 25 at Agrace Hospice Care Inc in Fitchburg. 

He was born in Boscobel Aug. 22, 1946 to Harold and Gertrude (Lenz) Lippman. He graduated from Wauzeka High School in 1964. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Navy as a communication specialist. He worked for Oscar Mayer for 32 years until his retirement in 2000. He then began working for UW Hospital and retired from there in Oct. 2012.

Orlie Baker

 

Orlie T. Baker, 98 of Ferryville passed away on Tuesday Aug. 27, at his home in rural Ferryville. 

He was born on Sept. 14, 1914 in Seneca, The son of Clarence and Belle (Taylor) Baker. He married Anne Preston on April 6, 1939 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2006.

Ella Lynn Mezera

 

 

Ella Lynn Mezera, infant daughter of Jesse and Crystal (Oswald) Mezera of Boscobel passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28.

A private family interment will be in the Wauzeka Cemetery, with Rev. Victor Feltes officiating. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.
