Donald G. McCloskey

 

Donald G. McCloskey, 88, passed away on Thursday, May 15, at Agrace HospiceCare from cancer. 

He was born March 7, 1926, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Helen M. (Gunderson) and Clement E. McCloskey. Don married Irene W. (Hill) on April 10, 1950, and they shared 52 love-filled years until Irene’s death in Sept., 2002.

Margaret Schmidt, 91, of Overland Park, Kan., passed away Tuesday, May 13. Margaret was the wife of the late Walter C. Schmidt. Services were held May 17 at Peace Catholic Church.

Jerry P. "Blackie" Lessard

 

Jerry P. “Blackie” Lessard, beloved brother, father and grandfather, 64 of Prairie du Chien passed away peacefully Monday, May 26, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born Jan. 2, 1950 in Prairie du Chien the son of George and Marie (Andrews) Lessard. Blackie worked for Farm Service Company in Prairie du Chien, but his real passion was fishing the Mississippi River, working as a commercial fisherman.

Donna J. De Groot

 

Donna J. De Groot, 59, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, May 26, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. 

She was born Jan. 7, 1955 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Lester and Christie (Aspenson) Nagel. She was a graduate of Wauzeka High School in 1973. She married Dale De Groot on Sept. 6, 1980 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien.

John R. Kernan

 

John R. Kernan, 97, of Cambridge, Minn. passed away Sunday, May 25, at Grace Pointe Living in Cambridge, Minn. 

He was born July 18, 1916 the son of James and Mary (Shields) Kernan. He married Iona Coorough on May 3, 1943 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. She preceded him in death on Oct. 21, 2002.

Avis J. Connell

 

Avis J. Connell, 98, of Marquette, died Friday, May 23, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor. 

Avis Jean, the daughter of Alvin and Alvina (Gossman) Breitsprecher, was born Aug. 5, 1915 in Elkader. Avis moved with her parents to Luana, in 1921. She graduated from Luana High School. Avis was united in marriage with Gerald Francis Connell on Jan. 4, 1939. To this union two children were born. She and Gerald moved to Marquette, and lived there for many years. Avis went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Marquette in 1955 and retired in 1975.

Raymond "Junior" William Shulka, Jr.

 

 Raymond “Junior” William Shulka, Jr., 67, of Prairie du Chien, died Sunday, May 18, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse. 

He was born on Jan. 26, 1947 to Raymond Fred and Irene Helen (Horstman) Shulka in Guttenberg, Iowa where he also attended school.

Junior enlisted into the United States Army on Oct. 17, 1964. He was a missile mechanic during his service time. He was honorably discharged in 1967. Junior was married to Barbara Uher on Sept. 5, 1969; to this union two children were born, Laura and Travis. They later divorced.

Edith M. "Sis" Jelinek

 

Edith M. “Sis” Jelinek, 81, of Prairie du Chien passed away peacefully Sunday, May 18, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, surrounded by her family after a sudden illness. 

She was born Sept. 18, 1932 the daughter of Rudy and Edith (Dubel) Konichek. She married Larry Jelinek Sr. on Sept. 21, 1950. She and her husband farmed for many years and Sis also worked at Walmart retiring after 25 years. She was a longtime member of the Cliffhangers Snowmobile Club and was an avid gardener. Sis was an excellent cook and a loving grandmother and great grandmother.

Tonya R. Dutka

 

Tonya R. Dutka died unexpectedly Sunday, May 18, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg, Iowa. 

She was born Feb. 28, 1968 in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Tom and Marilyn (Lipke) Yonke. She married Floyd Kevin Dutka on March 24, 1990 in Garnavillo. She worked as a home health provider for Lori Knapp Inc. in Prairie du Chien. Tonya loved crafts, crocheting and caring for her pets. She was a member of Plagmans Antique Association.

Betty J. Hackett

 

Betty J. Hackett, 87, of rural Boscobel, passed away Sunday, May 18, at Boscobel Care and Rehab. 

She was born Dec. 29, 1926 in Augusta to Carl and Jo Marie (McBroom) Lambrecht. She was married June 3, 1950 in Eau Claire to Allen Hackett. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
