Located on a gravel road amidst a dense population of sturdy trees, complete with wild turkeys yelping in the background and deer tip-toeing their way through the woods, is the home of Cedar Creek Rod Shop, making its location and business objective quite a dichotomy. 

Shannon and Jared Rowland, brothers and proprietors of the Rod Shop, grew up in a family deeply rooted and hard-wired in the traditions of fast cars and souped-up automobiles.

Local Memorial Day tribute set for Monday, May 27

Guttenberg area residents will pay tribute to veterans both living and dead at the community's annual Memorial Day parade and program on Monday, May 27.

The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Guttenberg Municipal Building, and participants are asked to be present by 9 a.m. Led by a police escort and color guard, the parade route will travel to River Park Drive, then north to the Guttenberg Area Veterans Memorial in Ingleside Park.

Clayton Ridge School board okays capital project improvements

At its monthly meeting on May 8, the Clayton Ridge School board of directors approved expenditures for capital projects, heard administrative reports, and  approved contracts.

Board president John Heying led members Mike Finnegan, Christine Aulwes, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Kathy Ihde and Jason Reimer through the agenda.

Beautiful flowers, fresh vegetables, fruits and leafed-out flowering shrubs and trees are a few of the many reasons Northerners love to see the advent of spring and summer.   

This spring Doris' Highway 52 Flowers, located at 26782 Highway 52 between Guttenberg and Garnavillo, has opened its greenhouse and accompanying garden supply shop to customers. The new garden center will be open Monday - Saturday, from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Guttenberg Care Center and adjoining Eagle Ridge Independent & Assisted Living are located at 1315 Acre St. The senior living center overlooks the  area's infinite rolling hills and showcases a panoramic view of the Mississippi River.

City awarded $344,640 grant for 5th St. truck route

The City of Guttenberg has been awarded a $344,640 federal grant that will be used to change a truck route in north Guttenberg from Third Street to Fifth Street. The project is slated to begin in  fiscal year 2022-23.

The award came as the result of a successful grant application written by City Manager Denise Schneider.

Robert Vavra has always had a passion for the river. As a young lad growing up in Swisher, Vavra enjoyed spending his time outdoors in and along the banks of the Mississippi River, canoeing, swimming, and snake, frog and crawdad hunting.
