Twice in 2021, the City of Guttenberg's Community Vitality team invited community members to provide input on what community projects they would like to see implemented in Guttenberg. More than 400 people responded to the survey that indicated a strong need for a local coffee shop.

Alicia Walke, DDS, River Town Family Dentistry, recently donated $2,500 dollars to St. Mary Immaculate Conception School (SMIC) in Guttenberg. She was inspired to give back to the community that has graciously welcomed her.

Lock and Dam 10 annual navigation report

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, released its 2021 navigation statistics for the Upper Mississippi River in January.

The 2021 navigation season unofficially ended Nov. 28 after the Motor Vessel Jonathon Erickson departed St. Paul, Minn. The 2021 navigation season started March 19 when the Motor Vessel R. Clayton McWhorter locked through Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minn., en route to St. Paul.

The organization is on a mission to promote the health and general welfare of the people; to model and encourage preservation, conservation, education and recreation through responsible use and appreciation of our natural resources and cultural heritage.

Free energy coaching for businesses, non-profits

According to the U.S. Dept of Energy, commercial buildings waste up to 30% of consumed energy. The locally-led Clayton County Energy District (CCED) knows that millions spent on utility energy costs unnecessarily flow out of Clayton County every year. The CCED recognizes how communities can spend less on energy; communities prosper when energy savings measures are implemented.

The Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics (GMHC) has recently added Dr. Carol Gunnett to their team of family medicine providers. Dr. Gunnett grew up in rural Pennsylvania in close proximity to Valley Forge, a couple of hours west of Philadelphia, on the eastern side of the state.

CCDG connects county communities

Clayton Ridge School board meeting and work session

The Clayton Ridge school board held its monthly meeting on Jan. 10 at the elementary library in Garnavillo. President John Heying led board members Jessica Bittner, Christine Aulwes, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Mike Finnegan and Jason Reimer through the meeting's agenda. Also attending were Superintendent Shane Wahls, Dean of Students Wade Marlow and staff members Collin Arndt, Lori Bunting and Tierney Hoefer.

Supt. Wahls reported on an upcoming work session with the Iowa Association of School Boards.

Dingesville #7 Country school memories

In 1850, Aaron Hyde Sr. came to Iowa and purchased his homestead farm, which included 280 acres in Mallory Township. He was a skilled carpenter and built many residences and schoolhouses in Clayton County, including Dingesville School, where his great-great-granddaughter, Janette "Jan" Hansel of Guttenberg, would be educated. He was also instrumental in the construction of Bethel Church.
