City council purchases lot for parking, awards dredging bid

At the regular monthly meeting on May 9 the Guttenberg city council moved forward on the purchase of a lot next to the municipal building, awarded a bid to remove sediment from Limbeck Pond, and okayed raises for non-union employees.

Mayor Fred Schaub led council members Mandy Ludovissy, Austin Greve, Jane Parker, Steve Bahls and Michelle Geuder through the evening's agenda. City Manager Denise Schneider was also at the council table.

Thursday, May 26, at GMHC Retirement open house for Dr. Smith

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics has announced the upcoming retirement of Andrew C. Smith, M.D., in June of 2022. 

Dr. Smith has practiced medicine here in Guttenberg his entire career, spanning 39 years. "He has been a beloved member of the hospital staff and community throughout his tenure here and will be greatly missed by all," said a GMHC spokesperson.

Guttenberg's historic Lakeside Ballroom presents "Rockin’ the River Music Fest," a three-night event set for May 27, 28 and 29, with the main event, "Head East" (to be featured in a separate story in next weeks issue of The Press) on Saturday night. The music festival will mark the nationally recognized historic landmark's grand opening under new management. Platinum event sponsors are Brown’s Sales and Leasing, with dealerships in Guttenberg, Elkader and West Branch, and Ironhill Power Sports of Waukon. Premium sponsor is Fidelity Bank & Trust in Guttenberg.

Guttenberg man named to UMGC post

Dan Kuempel of Guttenberg has been appointed the new Executive Director by the board of  the Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation

The Executive Director is responsible for the administration of the Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation grant giving program and operational policies adopted by the board.  This position serves as a representative for the UMGC Board by promoting the mission of the organization and gaming’s benefit to the area.

Alex Hoffmann, a former Guttenberg resident and Clayton Ridge graduate, and his wife, Mila, who is from Chernihiv, Ukraine have left the comfort and safety of their home in the United States to assist Ukrainian refugees at the refugee intake center at the Nivy Bus Station in Bratislava, Slovakia. Alex is the son of Dr. Jeff and Carolyn Hoffmann of Guttenberg.

Fire destroys Bootleggers


Flames engulf Bootleggers The Guttenberg Fire Department, assisted by six area departments, fought a fire that destroyed Bootleggers River Tavern - Restaurant and Bar in Millville on Tuesday evening, April 26. A fire on Tuesday evening, April 26, destroyed Bootleggers River Tavern, a popular restaurant and bar located on the banks of the Turkey River in Millville. 

The Guttenberg Fire Department responded to the call at 6:39 p.m. that reported there was smoke and a possible fire inside the business and second-story residence. All the people and pets were evacuated from the upstairs residence before the fire department arrived.

Historic Lakeside Ballroom, located at 1202 North 4th Street in Guttenberg, is holding a fundraising music event, "Concert for Ukraine," to offer financial aid to the people of Ukraine that have been affected and displaced by the armed conflict between Russian-backed forces and the Ukrainian military. The event is set for Saturday, April 30, from 6-8 p.m. with a suggested donation of $10 dollars per person.

Saunas are thought to have originated in Finland around 7000 B.C. The earliest known sauna structures were dug into the earth and lined with stone. Saunas have long been used for therapeutic and relaxation purposes and have been a part of traditional medicine for many centuries.

New Press delivery day!

Guttenberg Press subscribers should expect their newspapers a day later than usual beginning with next week's issue, May 4.

Beginning on that date, The Press will be printed on Tuesdays in Lancaster, Wis., a change from the usual printing date on Mondays at a plant in Calmar. 

The newspapers will then be delivered on Wednesdays to the Guttenberg post office and The Press office. Copies will be delivered to local news outlets later that day.

Clayton Ridge School board hires new principal

At the regular monthly meeting on April 13, the Clayton Ridge School board hired Terri  Thompson as the principal for grades 6-12. The action came after a special meeting on April 6 to conduct interviews with five candidates for the position.
