Clayton County hazardous waste collection

The Clayton County Conservation Board will sponsor a household hazardous waste collection, appliance and electronic recycling on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Osborne Nature Center. 

Appointments are required. Any Clayton County resident wishing to dispose of hazardous waste must call 1-877-982-4288 to set up an appointment.

River Town Family Dentistry in Guttenberg has broken ground on a new building project next to its current location on Highway 52. Dr. Alicia Walke DDS purchased the existing dental practice and building in 2021 from Dr. John Barron.

In 2020, Christa and Ricky Hefel launched Hilltop Homestead, located at 32817 Kale Avenue near Guttenberg. The ambitious entrepreneurs had a vision to provide northeast Iowans with a high-quality farm experience. Hilltop Homestead raises a variety of animals, including horses, goats, alpacas, llama, rabbits, dogs, cats, sheep and chickens. The State-certified homestead also provides boarding for dogs and horses, and offers horseback riding lessons and day camps.

Junior Achievement (JA) is the world’s largest and fastest-growing non-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Local Memorial Day tribute set for Monday

Guttenberg area residents will pay tribute to veterans both living and dead at the community's annual Memorial Day program on Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at the Guttenberg Area Veterans Memorial in Ingleside Park. 

This year's observance will be similar to last year's — there will be no parade, but a short program is planned.

Although St. Louis, Mo., is often considered Head East's hometown, the original members – brothers Roger and Larry Boyd, Steve Huston, John Schlitt, and Dan Piper — grew up in southern Illinois. The Band was originally called TimeAtions, but adopted the name Head East in 1969. Under their new name, Head East performed their first gig in Carbondale, Ill., about 100 miles southeast of St. Louis.

One of top 20 in the nation GMHC named top critical access hospital

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics was recently named one of the top 20 critical access hospitals (CAHs) for Best Practice—Patient Satisfaction in the country. 

The top 20 CAHs, including GMHC, scored best among CAHs as determined by the Chartis Center for Rural Health for Patient Satisfaction. The rankings were recently announced by the National Rural Health Association (NRHA). An awards ceremony will be held during NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference in September in Kansas City, Mo.
