Fifty-five local students from MFL Mar-Mac, Postville, North Fayette Valley, Clayton Ridge and Elkader Central participated in Clayton County's Advanced Manufacturing Day on Oct. 21. The worksite exploratory event included Pattison Sand Mine in Clayton and Gencor – Bituma in Marquette.

Iowa Academy of Family Physicians awards Dr. Hoffmann and Dr. Smith

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics has announced that two of its physicians, Dr. Jeffrey Hoffmann and Dr. Andrew Smith, were recognized at the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians’ annual banquet in Des Moines on Friday, Oct. 28.

Mederville's historic landmark bridge

Mederville, located in Cox Creek Township, Clayton County, was originally called St. Johan. When the town was first mapped out by Louis Reuther and Henry Meder, the town's namesake, a residence and sawmill were already in existence, built by James Beatty in 1854. 

Reuther added a general store, and together he and Meder established both a saw and flour mill. Another businessman, Joseph Unternahrer, opened up a blacksmith shop.

The event is being planned by faculty and students and will be a departure from the traditional ceremony held annually at the Veteran's Memorial in Ingleside Park. All community members are welcome to attend.

Avonique “Nika” and Jason Tipsword are the owners of “Dreamers Haven HEA,” a diversified homesteading operation focusing on dairy goat production. They are on a mission to educate Clayton County residents about dairy goats and consuming goat milk. 

“I grew up drinking raw milk from my family’s cow dairy,” Nika told The Press. “When the family decided to get out of the dairy industry, we all missed the fresh milk.”

Parker named National Runner of the Week

Loras College cross country runner Kassie Parker has been named the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Runner of the Week in Division III after laying down one of the best times ever recorded at her level.

The Guttenberg native and former Clayton Ridge student/athlete took first place at the Augustana Interregional Invitational held in Augusta, Va., on Oct. 15, with a time of 20:00.1, setting a new program record. The time is lauded as one of the fastest 6K times ever from a women's Division III runner.

City earns State Auditor award for efficiencies and innovations

The City of Guttenberg has received a Public Innovations and Efficiencies (PIE) Award from State Auditor Rob Sand. 

Guttenberg was recognized as the Best Performing City in its category and was one of nearly 30 winners in three categories — cities, counties and school districts — that participated in the contest.
