Evening blaze destroys group home in Guttenberg

Five residents of a group home in Guttenberg were successfully evacuated during a Thursday evening fire on Dec. 1 that destroyed their home at 523 North Second Street.

The Guttenberg Fire Department responded to the call at approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening and upon arrival found the building fully engulfed in flames and smoke.

Phelps Farm offers winter produce and tulip bouquets

Amy and Andrew Phelps, co-owners of Phelps Farm, cultivate over 40 different types of produce during the summer and fall gardening season. In the winter months their produce choices may decrease, but they still have plenty of nutritious vegetables available to customers. "We harvest lettuce 52-weeks out of the year that we grow in our unheated caterpillar tunnels," Andrew commented.

Parker named Female Athlete of the Year

Fresh off her second consecutive NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship, Loras College cross country graduate student Kassie Parker was named as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Female Athlete of the Year, according to the organization's official release.

Parker is collecting the honor for the second cross country season in a row after enjoying similar national success in 2021.

In early October, Deb Reardon of Guttenberg was recognized for her long-standing career in caregiving by Iowa CareGivers with the Margaret Swanson Legacy in Giving award.

For the past 43 years,  Reardon, a Home Health Aide at the Clayton County Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) office in Elkader, has been changing lives – one person at a time.

Beth Murray steps down after 24 years in business

In 1998, Beth Murray, and her husband, Dan, purchased Dave's Sports Outlet, owned by Dave, Rosalie and the late Loras Kickbush. Beth's intention was to add a nursery to the existing bait shop located at the intersection of Highway 52 and Garber Road, renaming it Murray's Country Garden and Outdoor Store.

GMHC awarded $364,800 federal health care grant

Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics will receive $384,800 in federal rural health care grant funds from the fiscal year 2022 appropriation package. 

The money will be used to help purchase a health care communication system and equipment including a nurse call system, ventilators, personal protective equipment and food pantry items.

Oak savanna restoration underway

 Since 2016, Clayton County Conservation naturalist Kenny Slocum and the Conservation Corps of Minnesota and Iowa (CCI) have been working on a restoration project at Bloody Run County Park, located two miles west of Marquette off Highway 18 on 128th St. The 135-acre park provides excellent trout fishing, hiking trails, and primitive camping opportunities.

Guttenberg merchants plan open house, Christmas parade

The traditional Christmas open house held by Guttenberg merchants will once again be held on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and will coincide with the national "Small Business Saturday" promotion. 

Participating merchants will be offering special sales, refreshments and door prizes that day as they welcome customers shopping for the holidays.
