Sons & Daughters Jansen continues his crusade

A 2016 Central graduate credits a high school class with sparking an interest in sustainability that he now plans to make his life’s work.

“Ms. Gritzner’s global science class really inspired me,” said Jacob Jansen. “In fact, I took the class twice; I loved it so much.”
The class exposed Jansen to a variety of environmental issues ranging from invasive species management to overpopulation to recycling. He worked on numerous projects including implementation of a composting system. Jansen and others involved in that effort received a Governor’s Environmental Excellence award for their work on the project, which was a first-of-its-kind in the state.

Time for a change Yelden shifting gears at VNA

With genuine humility, Nancy Yelden dismisses accolades about her work preferring instead to give credit to her colleagues.

“I wouldn’t have lasted as long as I have in this position without great staff and without the tremendous support of our Board of Supervisors,” she says, referring to her position at the Clayton County Visiting Nurses Association (VNA).
Her colleagues disagree: It’s Nancy’s compassion, empathy and genuine concern for her clients and their families that has set the tone for the entire office.

“She’s so good to people who come in here with all kinds of medical issues,” said Lisa Peterman, who works at the VNA front desk. “We see that every day. She’s a calming, caring presence, and she’s just so sincere.”
Celeste Strong, a dental hygienist hired by Nancy more than 11 years ago, echoes the sentiment.

Artist inspired by great outdoors

Rabecca Hennessy’s artistic talent was nurtured at her Grandma Amelia’s kitchen table where as a young child she sat for hours transforming pieces of paper into fanciful works of art.
“Old calendars, wallpaper, newsprint—she kept a stack of scraps handy and taught me how to draw on them,” Rabecca recalls. “She was my first teacher.”
Rabecca is one of 60 artists whose work will be showcased at the 4th annual Art in the Park Fine Arts Festival, which will be held August 18 and 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m in Founders Park, Elkader. In addition to a showcase of original art, the event will include entertainment, kids’ activities, a youth art exhibit, a silent auction, wine tastings and food.

Editor’s note: Elkader resident and World War II veteran Robert Buckner is a life-long Cubs fan. Last week, his team honored him for something that happened decades before any of them was born. His story follows.
In November 1943, future Central Community School District Superintendent Robert Buckner enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17 after graduating from Marion High School. About 15 months after his enlistment, he found himself embroiled in the costliest battle in Marine Corps history—battle for Iwo Jima.

Clayton County Courthouse Time for more clock restoration work

A recently awarded $50,000 grant will enabled restoration work to continue on historic the Clayton County Courthouse clock tower.

Clayton County has received a $50,000 Historic Resource Development Program (HRDP) state grant for continuing restoration work on the County Courthouse clock tower. The grant will be used for the upper areas of the tower. Since this is the highest part of the project, the costs escalate due to the use of tall cranes needed to get to the upper areas.
The areas in need of restoration are basically from the top of the windows on all four sides upwards, including all the roofing, wood decorative pieces, the wooden louvers, metal work and weather vane. This area has significant deterioration. Kendrick Lumber in Edgewood is donating all of the wood that will be used for this phase of the project. This donation was obtained through the efforts of Clayton County Supervisor Ray Peterson.

Long before Jay and Kay Moser retired last spring, companies interested in purchasing the pharmacy they’d owned and operated in Elkader for nearly 30 years approached them. But they turned down each offer preferring to wait for the right time and the right owners.

Central students make contribution

Central students created enough blocks to make three Quilts of Valor, which will be presented later this year. Once again, Central students have proven they’re in a class by themselves by cutting and stitching together enough fabric blocks to make three Quilts of Valor, which will be presented later this year to a trio of deserving veterans.
“We felt so blessed to receive these blocks,” said Cyndy Billmeyer, Northeast Iowa QOV coordinator and a member of the Breezy Ridge QOV quilters. “Anytime we can get ready-made blocks, it makes it easier and faster to design a quilt top.”
Billmeyer added that Central is the only area school that’s participated in the effort she manages.

Francis has found her ‘happy place’

Jenni Francis, owner of a new Elkader salon called A Little Off the Top, finishes a fancy braid for client Jamie Parish.

After nearly 30 years as a stylist, Jenni Francis has found her happy place. The Northeast Iowa native recently opened a hair salon on Mulberry Street, across from the Elkader Post Office. As part of refreshing the space, she turned one wall into the story of her life’s journey covering it with sayings that represent her irrepressible optimism and an “everything will be OK” attitude. One of her favorites is a Maya Angelou quote that also serves as her professional motto: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
“I truly believe that,” Jenni said, “and part of feeling good is looking good. That’s where I come in.”

Elkader women honored

Marilyn Nielsen and Janice Possehl, both of Elkader, have received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for their 35 years of dedication to the Central Community Hospital’s auxiliary rummage sale. Thank you to these special women for all they have done for our hospital and our community!
